Newsgroup Advice Please!

Hi all, i'm starting to dabble in newsgroups after getting a bit sick of torrnt sites where my upload speed makes it impossible to keep a good ratio.

Can someone recommend a good value newsgroup? Currenly on a free trial from hitnews but astraweb seems good at $11 per month unlimited.

One question - when i do a search for nzb's with nzbmatrix etc - can i download anything i find regardless of who my newsgroup server is? ie do all the newsgroups have the same files or do some have more than others?

If so where is the best place to search for stuff?

Hope this makes sense!

I'd say go for Astrawebs $11 special it worked out at £7.45 this month and retention is excellent (longer than advertised) 20 concurrent connections and good value, im using over 400GB a month on mine no problems.

http://www.merlins-portal.net/Vbulletin/nzblist.php and
http://nzbmatrix.com/index.php

are the main ones I use for finding the nzb's from.

I doubt I'm doing that amount a year!!!!! So what are you actually getting? (ie something decent you got recently!) Half the problem - I dont know what to go for!

Oh how things have changed! Just cant be bothered any more. I should probably cancel my usenetserver account and save the $14.90 pm fees. Just to damned lazy! (And know as soon as I do, I'd get the urge to download something!)

Thanks pals. Can you share an account, ie sign in from another computer?

I use hitnews with nbzmatrix to do searches & alt.binz for a client.

Don't use it much these days just jump on there every now and again for 3 days with the 3 day hitnews account then grab a load of stuff that lasts me a few months.

You can share on hitnews I think you only get 8 connections between you - that certainly used to be the case anyway. Not many others I've seen let you share. I used to use newsguy when I used it everyday.

worto.

I paid for a months unlimited, they never charged my account nor did they delete my account after the first month. So, I really did have unlimited access for nearly 18 months and it didn't cost me a penny! HA!

Are there any clients that you can restrict bandwidth? I'm using grabit but it downloads at max all the time, no good when your trying to do some surfing etc!

you can restrict that in grabbit as well as alt.binz - grabbit doesn't - or at least didn't last time I used it - support SSL encryption so if your newsgroup provider offers SSL your better off ditching grabbit.

How can you restrict d/l speed in grabit? It supports ssl now no should i stick with it or is there better free alternatives?

Until the moderators do something about these piracy threads, I'll be here to annoy you pirates. If you don't like it, don't steal copyrighted material.

Also, "bore off" makes no sense.

Dan. Unfortunately for you, people are laughing at you, not being annoyed by you.

If you think people are remotely worried that you are going to post a picture in a thread to put them off, you are seriously lacking in some department or other.

Maybe you should ask passenger 56 if they can help with your dilema.

cool if it does then I'd stick with it, alt.binz is better but I found grabbit a lot easier to use! I've not used it for ages can't you just right click on the grabbit icon once it's minimised in your taskbar near the clock and set it there - if not it's in the options, I'm sure I used to limit mine.

If noone else can help, I'll reinstall it & try it for you but I'm not going to get chance until the weekend.

I don't care. What I do care about is a public forum being used to discuss piracy over and over and over again.

The moderators here will (quite rightly) suspend or ban someone for racism, abuse etc but for some reason threads like this seem to go on without any kind of action.

If I posted a thread about where to buy some good quality weed, do you think the thread would last long or that I'd be a member here for much longer?

It's exactly the same. If people want to discuss their illegal activities on the internet then fine, just don't do it on a public forum, do it in private.

There is nothing illegal about newsgroups or torrents. There is plenty to download that isn't copyrighted. Apart from that tho, i for one couldn't give a turd what you think so take your preaching somewhere its wanted.

Again, bore off.

BTW - i've got loads of dstt cards if anyone needs one! DanJackson?

No one has mentioned piracy. You're too quick to draw conclusions.

They also suspend people for deliberatly going off topic or trying to invoke negative replies.

Dunno. Why not put it to the test.

Its not in the options or the cp unfortunately. Can you recommend another?

Edit - tried alt.binz and its great, cheers.

cool - these might help you too - there is a tutorial for grabbit & for alt.binz on there.

I use newsgroups to get HD copies of shows that are either not aired in the UK at all or are not aired in HD or are aired in the UK but are 6 months behind (granted not many these days)

That, if you ask me, is Sky / Virgin / TV companies problem not mine, if they just made it available in this country; but they don't and as such they leave me no alternative.

Whilst Ive obviously seen both before, to be honest, I just tended to use my servers own search engines (which allows you to create your own nbz's) Recently I've noticed it hasn't been too clever with its searches!

Just signed up with both and happily whiring away as I type.

It certainly makes life much easier, though I'd still use the search engine I have for more obscure stuff.

Have you signed up to the "lifetime" membership?

Is one better than the other do you think? Rather annoyed at getting told I was past my 20 day retention limit!!!

Haha...... BeThere and 16.5MB is more than adequate! As I said earlier, Ive been paying out to usenetserver for about 8 years now and in the past year, hardly used it. Just got too lazy - but with 2 1TB hard drives sitting here empty, its about time I went a bit mad!:w00t:

Thanks for all the advice chaps.

I've signed up at astraweb for $11 unlimited and i'm using alt.binz. D/l over 45gb thru the night. Boom!

Just one more question now tho - how do i go about repairing missing files?

On the par2 tab some of my d/l are green but some have stayed red with eg blocks 2/128

Does this mean when i play the movie for eg, i will have a couple of missing parts? How do i fix it?

You will need to download the PAR2 files for that release then I would use QuickPar to repair it.

Download quickpar2 software (freeware) this will attempt to repair the rars using the available par2 files.

That would be discussing a criminal act would it not? Completely different to downloading (even copyrighted) materials from usenet.

Anyone any thoughts on Newsdemon? https://www.newsdemon.com/join/ I'm caught between signing up to these two:

astraweb $11 unlimited special (currently £8.25 approx)

Newsdemon 50GB PER MONTH (actually 75GB with 25GB free) EUROPEAN SERVERS package at £8.47 (minus 25% discount with 25ngr25 coupon code) = £6.35

People here seem happy with astraweb but I've also seen some good reviews for newsdemon. Anyone have any thoughts before I take free trials with both? Thanks
#38
Just to say that I've gone with astraweb after taking free trials with giganews and newsdemon. All three give me the same speed and consistency on my line - avarage DL speed of 850 kB/s. Went with astraweb after realising how quickly I can download large amounts - the newsdemon cap would have been too limiting so the $11 astraweb special was best value. Thanks to harlzter for the recommendations - using both those sites to find nzb's and happy with the service from all three. :)
