My NDS has a broken hinge and the other one is cracked! It wasn't done via misuse just constant open and closing with playing quite a lot. The DS is nearly 2 years old so is out of warranty but does anybody know if Nintendo will repair this for free as it is there fault that its broken?

best give them a call, i know if it is white all the first ones had dogey hinges

I heard something about the hinges breaking if the 4th 'click' setting was used.
But then again, that cannot be the consumer's fault, as it is not misusing it in anyway.

On topic: I would give Nintendo a call, but it will cost you.
I, personally, would fix it myself, or let a friend have a shot.

If it's not repairable under warranty you can get replacement cases from places such as dealextreme or whitedog games.

I don't have any knowledge of fitting them but I'm sure youtube will be of help there.

It is the white ds lite, what is the 4th click setting? I shall give them a call tomorrow. I've seen the guides to fix myself and do not want to strip it as it was bought as a gift and wouldn't want to damage it further lol, judging by the guides the DS must be the worst handheld / games console to repair! Has anybody had any experience of this problem before? Thanks for every1's reply's so far :)

The 4th click setting refers to the tilt angle of the screen.
Most people only use the 3rd click setting, but the 4th click setting is said to damage the DS.

The black one is the only one that does not suffer this breakage. The white one is the worst.

My son's black one has just broken and same as op, it's a couple of years old so am debating whether to buy a repair kit. Has anyone bought one from dealextreme and know how easy/difficult it is to do?

i tried to fix my sons but as the hinge had snapped and the case from dealextreme doesnt send you replacement hinges juse the case i found that it couldnt be repaired,
even if the hinge wasnt snapped i still would of struggled as it is really difficult and would take at least 3 uninterupted hours.

I bought a replacement case - you have to be VERY VERY dexterous to do it right. I just couldn't do it - too fiddly for my sausage fingers!

In the end I sold it on eBay for £35 and put the money towards a new one. You will have no trouble selling at that price.

The cases from Dealextreme are the best you can buy. You can barely tell them apart from the original. Replacing the case is very fiddly though and you have to be very careful not to tear the top screen's ribbon cable or else the DS will not power on.

I have just finshed repairing two DS Lites, the hinge assembly has to be pulled from the original DS & put into the replacement case, this is like a metal barrel so impossible to snap!

[hi, this is my first post so bear with me! My son has a black ds lite which i bought for him 2 xmases ago when they were first out (such hassle getting one!) It has been his pride & joy & he hasn't mis treated it at all - one afternoon he went to play it & when he opened it the right hinge 'pinged' off, it still worked but he had to prop it up & be so careful, so he was so upset he couldn't carry it around. i tried to get in touch with Nintendo to get them to repair it, but after 2 months waiting for a response (after many calls & emails) i bought a new case off ebay, including tools. i spent a whole sunday afternoon carefully following the instructions & eventually had it all back together, it switched on but the top screen now doesnt work - i must've damaged the flat copper wiring thing. My advice would be to find a specialist, or sell the damged one on ebay & put it towards a new/hardly used one. the damaged ones still go for good money. If Nintendo products weren't such fun i'd never buy from them again, but they are, so i guess i will one day!!
