Nintendo has signalled the "end of life" for its Wii U games console, which was first released in 2012.
Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo America, told Polygon that Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would be the company's final game for the device.
"We really are at the end of life for Wii U," he said.
The Wii U struggled to match the success of the original Wii device. It will be succeeded by the Nintendo Switch console in March...

With such a short support life cycle and sales of Nintendo hardware in such decline makes you wonder if it will be worth the risk getting a switch considering the hefty asking price! Nintendo should instead concentrate on releasing quality titles for its recently released 'NEW' 3DS.
Switch us doomed to failiure! :(

I've got it pre-ordered for the WiiU. No reason (yet) to jump on the Switch launch. Barring Zelda, nothing launch window appeals so much I can justify the huge outlay. Barring faster loading times on the Switch - cartridge vs disc - don't know why the WiiU version would differ greatly. I mean, it was built for the WiiU.

Talk about going out on top. Most consoles fizzle out. You can't say that regarding the WiiU releasing it's first Zelda for it - HD ports/remasters not permitting.

I will probably pick up a cheap used wii u to play zelda through to the end then sell it on afterwards to get my money back. Its cheaper than getting a switch.

Bet theirs going to be alot of used wiiU's changing hands when zelda comes out!

I reckon just dance 2018 is still on the cards for Wii u

There are some great Wii U games myself and others missed out on so I hope they come to the Switch. Apart from Mario Kart do you think we will see any others? I would love to get the chance to play Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 2 on the Switch!

Maybe they will have wiiu games on the store available to download for SWITCH, Bayonetta 2 was pretty special and deserves a sequel on switch and New 3ds!

I like the way you based an estimate of 7 million sales of the Switch on the current trend.... There is no trend as the sales and dates of productions of the different consoles that go down that list are random. It could easily sit in the middle or at the top. You've just added it at the bottom of the list with a random number lol.

They don't do themselves any favours giving up on their hardware so swiftly, never bodes well for the next system

What's the legal situation with regards to me backing up all the games I've bought?

It is unclear at this stage.
There's no backward compatibility for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U games, Nintendo confirmed to Polygon — not in terms of using your old physical media on the new system, anyway.

It's understandable why people would think it might be. Nintendo Switch uses cartridges called GameCards for its games. That initially left room to speculate on whether you can play your old DS and 3DS games on the new console, since those handhelds also use cartridges. There's some obvious physical differences between each set of cartridges, though; the Switch's cards appear to be larger and longer than those used by the DS and 3DS.

It's important to note that not every Nintendo home console has been able to play the games of its predecessor, especially when the new system delivers games on a different format than the previous one. The Wii U can play Wii games, for example, as both use discs. The GameCube could only play GameCube games, as it dropped the cartridges used by Nintendo 64 in favor of small optical discs.

There is the Virtual Console for some backward compatibility, however. The Wii, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS each have a library of older Nintendo systems' titles available for download, thanks to the Virtual Console. It's unclear if the Nintendo Switch will boast a similar Virtual Console selection of its own.

I was refering to the physical games I've bought. ie those on a disc. :)

Had a wii u sat around for over a year but got it out again at xmas and I think it's a brilliant console kids were still playing the wii before and ps2 while I played the ps4 got rid of the ps4 once I got the wii u out again it's that good, The games are great fun Mario 3D toad tracker and just dance 2017 are brilliant. The wii U would of sold more if the console price was dropped by a fair bit I was in GAME the other day it's £200 second hand.

It would have sold more if it didn't say Nintendo on it sadly thats the world we live in now.

The Wii U has been my favourite Nintendo console since the N64 and easily my favourite out of it and the PS4/Xbox One - the Sony and MS consoles have disappointed with few exclusives I've been interested in plus they've become a lot more complex for little advantage so instead I've mostly been playing on the PC which has improved a lot as a gaming platform. The Wii U on the other hand generally offered something a bit different with outstanding first party titles that were generally well polished on release and a refreshing change from the frequently broken AAA releases and stupidly overpriced DLC.

Something I thought the Wii U did particularly well was local multiplayer which is something that seems to be getting less support on other platforms, not only did the Wii U support it in many of their titles (even up to eight players for Smash brothers) they had superb controller compatibility - it was no problem to mix the gamepad, the Wii classic controller, the Wii U pro controller and Wiimotes, they even made the old Gamcube controllers compatible for Smash Brothers.

All that goes out the window with the Switch though as it has absolutely no backwards compatibility for the controllers and the accessory prices are crazy for what they are. The limited onboard storage (even with micro SD storage) and high cartridge prices aren't that appealing either although will see how it does in time.
