no left click on laptop

Got a problem on sons laptop that has me stumped. The left click does not work, not via the button, not via tapping the track pad and not via a usb mouse either.
Have run malwarebytes, but nothing changed, tried updating drivers but nothing.
Any ideas??

On the taskbar across the bottom is there a list of programs at the bottom right?

Usually one called something like 'pointing device', you can change mouse settings in there.

Has it got Synaptics installed? Most laptops do.

Check out the settings for it it Control Panel --> Mouse --> Synaptics tab. If the settings all seem OK, uninstall it, see if it resolves the error (it should), and then reinstall the latest version. Set a restore point before doing so you can revert if anything goes amiss

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

well none of the above has worked, not even the all mighty fixing 'switch on/off' trick

Can you not go into the control panel, click on printers and other hardware, then onto the mouse settings.

Maybe the left and right button have been changed?

first thing i checked, i swapped the buttons over, so the right button works as a left click, but still nothing from tapping the pad and the actual left button wont work, not even with an external mouse plugged in.

What a strange problem! Only other suggestion can make is reinstalling the mouse/touchpad. Go to Device Manager (via System on Control Panel) and right click the mouse and/or the touchpad and select Uninstall. Now restart (might need to navigate to off button using the keyboard if mouse has been uninstalled!! Use Windows key to open Start Menu then tab to off button, and Enter to select off)... Upon restarting mouse and touchpad will reinstall and hopefully work again.
