my nokia 5800 has managed to die after only having the phone for 4 days!
i switched it on as normal this morning and all it said on the screen was;

unable to activate phone please contact the retailer.

and that was it no other function worked.
i rang vodafone up and explained it and they are going to be sending out a replacement phone monday but i was wondering if anyone else has had a problem with there 5800 as im a bit wary about getting another now as i dont want it to break again! hopefully it was a one off like the guy from vodafone told me today, just thought id post to see if anyone else had problems?

Well, I've had mine a week and so far, no problems at all. Hopefully you'll have better luck with the nxt one!;-)

There's been millions of units sold worldwide, and your the first person ive heard who has had a problem.

it sounds like a problem with the VODAFONE branded firmware as Nokia never use the term "retailer" its always "network provider"

if you do have the problem again its prob a faulty batch

When you get your replacement make sure you update it 2 the latest firmware here:

personally i would debrand it if i had one, though, after looking at one today, i wont bother getting one.

Give it a few weeks hopefully Nokia will have new firmware for it. Nokia Symbian OS is a smart phone platform, when the firmware is devloped it works fine on the phone. When Nokia has released the phone, problems are found by users. This is how Nokia improved there firmware....just remeber you got peace of mind with Nokia's 24 month warrenty (2 years)!

Ive got the SIM FREE version of this phone, and i dont realyl have any problems...but ive only ever used it twice cant let my Nokia N85 go! lol

muppet 1 yr warranty and no repair shops in the high street great choice

It's two year warranty and any carphone warehouse with a service centre will fix it. I think you'd find it hard to say carphone warehouse isn't on the highstreet. Please try not to make stupid statements again.

damn you're right about the warranty but i don't have a Carphone warehouse on my high street

Yeah, but most cities do. Carphone warehouse fix any phone under warranty for free even if it's not bought from them, a lot of people don't no this. They've done phones for me twice so far, taking under 3 days each time, the most recent time took under 48 hours.

Think there's a store in Oxford but it's just a small kiosk I assume they'll only fix phones where a contract is in place for them to receive money from the manufacturer for repairing the phones. So maybe not for weird 3rd world companies?

you clown....no sony ericsson centers mean give it to carphone warehouse who take 3 days to fix the phone....OR take your Nokia phone down to Nokia Service center and get the phone fixed within the hour....nokia way forward

take ur phone down 2 cpw, need recipt proof you brought the phone bla bla bla, take the phone to nokia service center they dont ask for nothing (even when you send the phone to Nokia direct) they log everything with the IMEI.....so even if i sold a nokia phone 2 u without recipt but is under warrenty you can get it fixed.....

Not necesserily true due, at least yes cities will bound to have ones but small towns are hit and miss as some do some dont, some have closed due to lack of business etc and even then of course the repairs arent done instore so all it does is saves the price of a phone call.

Pretty sure a Nokia warranty is void if you flash or debrand the phone, sony ericsson's are still valid, and you don't need a receipt all sony ericssons have the manufacturers date printed in them, and they have a barcode that carphone warehouse scan and it gives them all the phones info and warranty.

updating the firmware is fine, if you debrand by someone who is unauthorised its invalid like SE.

They are in different leagues, 5800 is a smartphone most SE's are not.

Do think a little please people.

CPW actually debranded my O2 SE P900, it was having problems with the battery in that it couldn't read the status from it so they reflashed the firmware and gave me a brand new battery for it all within a couple of hours. Although the phone was bought from O2 the CPW was an SE service centre so they just scanned the IMEI and went ahead. All in all I was very pleased to say the least.

I currently have a 5800 though which is working fine, hopefully won't be testing the local service centre.
