Nokia N97 thoughts?

Hello Boys & Girls

What you lot think of the Nokia N97, we all have to admit its an amazing phone. Nokia have finally produced something new and amazing. I'm personally thinking of buying it, either contract or sim free, depending on when my contract expires.

What are your thoughts on the phone itself? Worth the money, worth the hassle?

I think it's safe to say that your opinion is quite different to the majority, no N95 I've used is either slow or buggy on its final release (or many of the intermediate ones).

I've not bought an N97 yet but been disappointed after trying it out mainly because the keyboard seems a waste of space, the layout is very odd and the keys are very flat with little response leaving me with many typos even at a slow pace. I'm a big fan of the 5800 so the idea of a slightly beefed up version with a keyboard added was perfect as I've really missed this from the E90 but the N97 seems weaker in several regards than the 5800 (particularly reception) and the keyboard seems a waste of space.

Well when you choose settings it says no items available for a few seconds before the menu appears, it never exits anything, if you're on the phone book and press the red button it just minimises it instead of closing it, yet it's less button presses to re-open it than it is to restore the minimised version, just so many annoying things like that.

Never had problems like that on my N95, you must have a faulty phone. :whistling:

whilst i like nokia phones the 5800 was a let down, the n95 was a let down so im not feeling much for this. in a few months people will be bored of it and will be looking for a new phone.

I have the iphone and always said i didnt want one but now i have one its the best phone I have ever had.

I will be leaving Voda in Sept after 18m with my N95 8Gb, having previously had std N95. Love 'em. Can't fault them. The N96 was **** build quality, and buggy. The N97 is far from perfect, but may tempt me to stay with Nokia. Most likely I will change to iPhone as my bro' can't keep quiet about how good it is. Just not sure about 02 reception near me.

I thought the n95 was a bit weak as well. I absolutely loved it for as long as I owned it, but after upgrading, I saw how bad the phone was in various respects, the most obvious being battery life and how crap web browsing was. Mine very rarely made it through a full day of use.

I think it's impressive in some ways. The design is a bit marmite, the specs are pretty solid and the memory is good.

But actually using it is terrible. Compared to the iPhone or Android devices, it just feels like hard work. I'd actually say it's worse to use than the Blackberry Storm in lack of intuitiveness.

It somehow manages to feel cheap as well, much like the 5800. Neither one is as nice to use as a nice capacitive screen with a decent OS.

Just makes it an awful phone to use.

You guys are too fussy. The perfect phone doesn't exist, they all have their quirks and bugs.
Pound for pound, the N97 is the highest specced phone out there atm. And fw updates will make it better

Yeah, I happened to get two N95's with the exact same thing, it's built into the software so yours will have that.

even after explaining to you how to close programs you keep coming out with this rubbish that it just minimises programs....you press the C button not the red button read the manual next time you buy a new phone.

You'll get the symptoms you describe if you don't close all the programs as they use up the RAM when left open

Best spec'd, with only 128MB of RAM and that puny little 400MHz CPU? Pffffffffffffffffft.

TV-Out, GPS, 32gb storage, qwerty, 5mp CZ camera, 1500mah battery, plus all the usuals.
Why you choose to cherrypick the two weak points? Like I said, no phone is perfect. Deliberately so IMO, as it keeps expectation strong on future models. I see it as the best out there, its a phone lol
Where is the need for a 1ghz processor that will just eat up the battery?

Not forgetting the issue of heat dissipation "cough iphone"

i've had no experiance of the n97 yet, although it looks great. I had an n95 and an n96 though. Got rid of both. Had high hopes for both. N95 was CRAP build quality, especially if you got the ones that were made in asia. The european made ones were slightly better. The web browsing looked good but it couldn't handle half the sites i tried to goto. As for the n96, i thought the build quality was FAR better. My bro dropped his from 6ft onto a file floor and it was fine. The only thing made me get rid of it was battery life. Bloody terrible. About 6 hours, if that.

Its funny, ive had the following smart phones. N70, N73m N82, N95, N85, N96 and the iPhone 3G and hoping the N97

Every Nokia smart phone has issues, mainly software issues. In fact every smart phone I have come across has issues. Admittingly ive had issues with all the smart phones above, but Nokia seem to correct all the issues with a simple software update.

With Nokia N97, its another flagship device, apprantly from research its "flying" off the shevls. So there seems to be alot of satisfied customers.

My Nokia N85 had an issue when you put the phone on silent and listen to music, and you get a call or text. The sound is played through the speakers when it should vibrate.

Software update didnt fix it, I called Nokia sent the phone in they couldnt fix it till the update. They loaned me a phone with same specs I could choose from N96, N82 or Nokia N80.

I mean the support Nokia offer, is fantastic!!!!!

Even with nothing running the menu still says no items available for 2 seconds when you choose it.

My phone has never done this , well weird that you have 2 phones with the same symptoms.

Ive had my N95 for 3 years and still going strong.... Yes the browser is weak but everything else is great, especially the camera . I use tomtom on it every week and it works perfectly. The new Iplayer app and youtube are excellent. I want the N97 but will wait for a good deal to pop up first. Im more than happy using my N95.

Nor has mine, the only fault that i have with mine, is that the volume up button, has come off, which is a known fault but it doesn't bother me greatly

what were the alternatives available when the n95 came out?

cant remember

Yet most user reviews seem to say they love the phone. The pro reviews are strangely derogatory, as if they have a pro-apple agenda or something?

Short review on the Nokia N97 on the basis of having it for three days:

I purchased the Nokia N97 on an upgrade from Orange it cost me £35 a month for an 18 month contract. I get 1200 mins, unlimited texts, internet & landline calls.

The phone itself....

When turning the N97 on, the battery was already in the phone so it "looked" like it was used.

The first phone was faulty, the phone didnt flip when opening qwerty keypad. Orange replaced the phone same day.

Second phone was wicked, no issues: I only have the following issues:

The back light of the phone fails to come on sometimes, therefore you need to open and close slide to get it working.
Widgets fail to load when turning device this is fixed by taking battery in and out
finale issue is phone sometimes stops working completely e.g. menu doesnt work and hard rest fixes this issue.

Clearly their are some annoying issues with the Nokia N97, thankfully Nokia has got the hardware right, compared to my N85 it seems like a solid phone..
