Hi,

I needed a broadband connection for my flat (new building), which is in a non cable area.

I do have a BT phone socket in my flat but the line is not connected.

When I phoned BT, asked them to activate this line as I want to use BRoadband+line rental + phone services from another provider (Talktalk, Tiscali, ...) not BT.

They said £125 to send the engineer to connect me at the BOX, and then I have 12 months contract with them.

Does anyone have any idea how to activate the phone line without 12 months contracts with BT?

Thanks in advance

In some areas you can pay sky for the line rental now if you take one of their packages, I dont know if they can activate your line but you could look into it. Sky broadband is supposed to be decent but talk talk is not so good if you download a lot.

BT still need to physically hook up the line, usually just activating a copper pair that is already there in order for any BT Wholesale (such as non LLU Talktalk/Tiscali) or LLU ADSL service to be provided.

Any BT Landline service comes with 1 year minimum contract now on Option 1 which you have no choice but to take for the cheapest service, Option 2/3 have had 12month contract for years now.

im affraid BT is the only povider in terms of fixed line infrastructure
if you dont want them you need to switch to other provider with deifferent technology i.e. cable such as virgin

sure there is supposed to be a contract buyout option which used to be about £15. mention that to any providers see if they know more

Your not limited to BT providing a line for you, most providers now have the option to arrange for an installation/reconnection. I installed a line for a post office customer the other day who said she got re-connected for free, I have no way to verify this though. Also try madasafish, Plusnet or even sky (they'll credit your account with the £125 install charge). BT retail are now just a service provider, the same as talk talk, Post Office, Sky etc. Openreach looks after the network and charges the service providers to carry out the installs/repairs and passes on the charges to the service provider. Whether the SP passes on the charge to is down to the SP.

You don't have to go through BT. A neighbour connected with Vodafone and got mobiles and landline calls on one bill (incluiding rental).

How do I get the half price 18 month 3 broadband contract offer - it appears that you need to be an existion customer?

No, house was a new build, so no previous connections.

Quick tip: avoid Tiscali like the plague.
They are terrible!
Check their support forums and see all the happy customers they have
