I have just bought a new computer with vista. It has no security on it, I have always used norton but I have been reading through some feedback and it would appear that norton is not so good afterall. Can anyone give me advice as to which security/firewall pack I should buy. Also, should I use vista or buy windows xp?

Vista isn't as bad as people make out. Just stick with it and your money

As for Norton, I would say avoid it as it is a resource hog, and there are better security programs available.

For Anti-Virus you may want to look at the like of Anti Vir, AVG and Avast. They are all free (or have free versions). Personally I prefer Avast, however everyone has their favourites.

As for Firewall, Zonealarm's free firewall is often recommended, although I'm sure there are others that people will mention.

This is not quite true. Open up the Windows Security Centre and see what you already have (it is in the Control Panel).

Vista does come with a built in firewall which is certainly better than the one that came with XP. It may already be on. May not be as good a ZoneAlarm, but may be adequate.

Vista also comes with Windows Defender which is an anti spyware program. This also may already be on and working.

Norton is worse than actual viruses... :?

Kaspersky or NOD32 are the best if I remember correctly, but there is no need to pay for one as AVG Free exists

Really ?

What did PC Pro says about Norton Internet Security 2008

"Norton's latest security package is comparatively pleasant to use, with a responsive and generally well thought-out interface. It's quite well featured, too, with an "identity safe" for personal information and optional parental controls. These help to justify the price, but the degree of protection it offers is nothing special".

Their winner was Kaspersky Internet Security 7.

I would rather have a virus on my PC than Norton! Widely known to be a resource hog which cripples your PC in the long term and is very diificult to uninstall

AV = Avast (find it much better than AVG)

Firewall = Comodo (much better than Zonealarm)
