"Dear all,

I heard this story from my CEO today. Her sister went shopping in John Lewis. She visited the ladies room and hung her handbag on the back of the toilet door. As she carried on about her business, a hand suddenly appeared over the top of the stall and grabbed her bag clean off the hook!!!

As if this wasn't bad enough, she reported the incident to the manager of the store. A couple of days later she took a call to say her bag had been found, without her purse. She arranged a time to go and meet the manager to collect her things.

On arriving at John Lewis at the agreed time, the manager was not expecting her - nothing had been found, no one had called.

When the lady got home, her house had been burgled, with no sign of forced entry, they had used her Driving License for the address and her keys to let themselves in!!!!!!

I promise this is real - it isn't just a scaremongering story, I was so shocked at how complex bag snatching crime has become.

Please be extra vigilant ladies, Christmas is a bad time for this sort of thing anyway, but with the credit crunch there are a lot
of desperate criminals out there!!

Best Regards"

So someone grabbed her bag in the middle of a busy department store and managed to get clean out the store without being caught? Did she just stand there and do nothing??

If she was in a toilet cubicle I would imagine that she would have had to pull up her kecks first before she could do anything.

Yes it happens a lot. Thats why never carry anything with your address on! no driving licence!

Anything stolen report it asap. Never give details over the phone and if unsure call the shop directly. There are similar ones with ebay. Where they know your address and few weeks down the line they message stating can I see it during the week. They say out or work and they come round.

Have to watch out. Id even be careful in changing rooms with cameras also. Always try it on over stuff!

Not to scare anyone though. Common sense really.

This has been happening for a while .. also watch out if you put your bag on the floor as bags get grabbed from under the door!!

This exact story?

Yes with people stealing from changing rooms when person is there. Gym changing rooms, stores etc. Then they call. Its rare the aftermath of calling..... but yes.

Same for burglarys, a lot of the time they will try and strike the same place as they know it inside and out. Thats why if something happens, theft or whatever. Report it and get some crime prevention.

Where exactly have you got these 'facts' from?

This happened to me when I was shopping in Meadowhall - put my bag on the floor while I tinkled. A hand appeared from the under cubicle wall next door and grabbed it. I caught my bag with my foot and grabbed the hand was bending the wrist back towards to the cubicle wall when I realised it was my bloody mother screaming from the next cubicle. She thought it would be funny until I almost broke her wrist

Made me think how easy it could happen though

Shouldn't you leave that to the police? I'm not sure they like members of the public helping out like that...

Think you miss my point.

Shouldn't really matter if it was scaremongering or not to be honest, forewarned is forearmed .

Just as an added extra and believe me it is very true stealing handbags and purses from supermarket shopping trolleys is an everyday occurrence. Next time you are shopping take a look and see how many handbags/bags you can see either hung over the handle clip or placed inside the trolley.

They are a crime waiting to happen. Unfortunately an awful lot of the older generation have a habit of doing this.

Be safe people and just think of the hassle involved if your bag gets stolen. House keys , car keys, credit cards, cash, personal belongings, mobile phones, etc etc etc. A veritable Aladdin's cave !!
