I was thinking of writing a thread about this after I saw it on BBC news this morning...I think it's disgusting that France will now penalise tourists with double the original value of the item, so if someone is caught with a fake designer bag, they could be charged several hundred or even inprisonment.

They should be targetting the manufacturers who intentionally create these items, not the consumer who can't afford the items during a worldwide recession.

Most people that purchase fakes, can't actually afford originals, so it's not costing the industry a penny, so I believe they're wrong in thinking it's costing the companies so much revenue.

So they create demand for fakes. I can see the French perspective here. It also devalues the brands who are being ripped off.

Not really because there are some ignorant people out there who doesn't know the situation or that something is actually fake.

My brother also bought me a beautiful Armani watch for £200 for me the previous christmas but after it was damaged within 6 months and taking it to loads of jewellers to get it repaired, they all kept asking me if it was a fake. :x

I don't know if it was a fake, although the site my brother purchased it from has a good reputation, every jeweller informed me water damage shouldn't of occured.

Ignorance isn't an excuse and I really doubt most people think they can buy a Louis Vuitton bag from a stall in Bangkok.

Punish the people who create the demand. We punish people who use drugs (wrongly), so why not here?

Because in my case, I don't think the watch my brother purchased is fake but jewellers have questioned it's authenticity...so what would happen in my case if I was stopped in customs with the watch my brother paid a hefty price for and he believes it's legit?

The point that I'm making is that we don't even know if it's fake but he purchased it thinking it's original, yet if I take that abroad, I could face inprisonment or charged £400...would that be fair?

What about people who work hard to afford nice things, and then see some little oik wearing a knock-off?

People then assume he's wearing a knock-off too.

Personally, I don't care but I can see the French point of view here.

It's not really the case though, is it?

You can generally tell that when someone wears an expensive designer top and then wears shoes costing about a fiver is the big giveaway lol.

You can generally tell who's wearing originals, so I don't think you have to worry about that...unless you can't pull it off. :)
I personally still wear a lot of designer (originals) and I don't begrudge people wearing fakes.

I bought all my "fakes" as gifts for other people ha ha. Its just something that you do when you go the far east, you go to the markets and buy stuff. It was about 15 years ago and I have been back since and not bothered with the whole fake thing.
Now I wouldn't be seen dead in anything "fake" - urgh make me cringe just thinking about it.

I can tell you love your friends and family then if you wouldn't be caught dead with the stuff you're buying. :w00t:

it made me laugh
when they have dignitaries coming like the president all market stalls that sell fake goods are forced to close so they dont see anything untoward there.

as soon as theyre gone they all open up again

I thought practically everything sold in markets were fake...doesn't tumbleweeds fly across when he visits? :whistling:

nikkib123
Yep I am love plus half of them asked me too :-D

Awww....if you love them that much, maybe suggest they take a trip to Paris. :w00t:

My ex's kid and all his friends bought LOADS of fakes on his trip to China a few weeks ago...I think he wants to do all his shopping there every summer now. :giggle:

Ha ha I meant to put I am all love, looks like I am calling you love

Don't say that.......I'm going to assume you're gonna pay for an expenses trip to Paris...the jokes on you though...I don't wear fakes. :-D

Yeh girl in work just come back from Turkey all faked up but they are so rubbish, really bad fakes. I was ashamed for her :)

Yeah, Turkey has some terrible fakes cos there's a bigger profit margin against unsuspecting tourists....my ex purchased 3 bottles of perfume out there, even though I was telling her it's blatantly fakes, even after smelling it, she went ahead and bought it after she forced me to haggle with the guys at the shop....shame though...she said the scent disappeared within minutes of putting it on. :giggle:

That'll teach her to go against my advice but at least I respected her wishes. lol

interesting you are using one wrong done against members of society to justify another, pretty low on the debate scale.

The argument against most intellectual theft is severely flawed, there is absolutely no way of knowing how much removal of fakes will translate to sales so all figures quoted are simply wishful thinking.

Definitely...it's stupid if anyone thinks that a person is fully kitted out in fakes wearing a £50 total outfit is going to spend several hundred just because of slightly better quality (if you can say that most of the time lol) and a strong brandname.

I don't buy fakes, genuine immitation or replica items maybe, but fakes; never!

I don't think I've actually mentioned that. I know you're using a stock rebuttal but please, mind the hair trigger.

What I said is that it can damage the brand that is being imitated and from that perspective I can understand the law.

If IPT lawyers had been around in the early 1900's we'd all be walking or riding in horse drawn carriages, for what is a car but an idea 'stolen' from the coachbuilders.

Stock rebuttal?, no just common sense. there are millions of products selling in much higher volumes than gucci etc and taking higher sales PA, why aren't they counterfitted because the route to market makes it unfeasible.
That is the way to control counterfeiting, not throwing in jail the very people who you say you are trying to protect from being flogged inferior goods.
That statement in particular show the contradictions of so many people who think they or their intellectual abilities are worth more than they actually are, its sad but true.

Damage the brand?, again not sure i would agree, anyone stupid enough to buy counterfeit goods believing them to be real is unlikely to be aware of the inferior quality anyway.

(can you tell i'm bored at home waiting for the mrs?)
