Hi all, trying to write this clearly so if your not sure what i mean jsut ask :)

My brother got a new 1.5Tb Hard drive and formatted it in Windows Media Center - (Computer Managment - Disk Managment) into 3 x 500Mb partitions (I could see all these hard drives, after this) then i moved 300Gb on to one of the drives, and all was fine.

I then needed to install Windows XP Home, due to my brothers Media Center Disk is broke, but after a full install of home and a full update, the XP OS will not read the 1.5Tb Disk, it just comes up as dynamic foreign drive and cant see the petitions.

Any chance anyone has any clues on how to fix it without losing the data i put on one of the petitions on the 1.5Tb drive?? As the drive must be fine as it let me partition it and format it, into 3 chunks and then move loads of data to it and its only since installing new OS I cant see it

Rep added to anyone who can help :)

Is it still showing as a 1.5 tb drive?

How did the drive be visible in the first place to move data on to it... ie what system did u use etc ?

You say you installed XP back on it... is that the drive youre booting from now ?

Yes I think so in computer management, but it only comes up as 1 drive and it cant see the partitions. The only option it gives me is basically recreate the drive again, but i dont want to lose the stuff on it.

I was wondering if when i formatted (without looking) if i maybe had locked the formatted drive to that version of windows media center.

Computer management / disk management / right click / select IMPORT

Supposedly this works and doesnt effect data. BUT please only do it as last resort coz if it looses data i dont want you coming back to blame me LOL :p

Solutions

PS there is also a link on that page to TestDisk... maybe try that before just incase.

Your call either way OK ;-)

I wrote that all in the opening post, how am i meant to write it any clearer, here it is in order of what happened.

1. Added 1.5Tb drive to Windows media Center PC

2. Partitioned and formatted into 3 x 500Gb drives thou computer managment

3. Installed Windows XP Home on the Hard drive Windows Media Center was on. (1.5Tb does not come up)

4. Updated XP Home on windows update.

5. 1.5Tb drive still does not come up in my computer, or computer managment (but in computer managment the drive comes up as "forign" and its a dynamic drive

Was not being funny by the way :)

Sorry m8 i thought u meant you installed xp on the 1.5tb. Didnt realise you had a primary drive also.

Anyway looks like most posts point to TestDisk so may be your first port of call. Good luck :-)

Hi, Where is the IMPORT button you mention, i dont seem to have that, do you mean right click "disk managment" as i just cant see it??

Thanks btw :)

I think it means right click on the 'dynamic and foreign' drive within disk management - the one that u know is the 1.5tb.

Basically this should i think get the drive back to a basic drive, which is what u need.

BUT please try that TestDisk first as that seems to be the most recommended ;-)

PS i think i read somewhere that you DO NOT click on just 'convert to basic' as it WILL loose data on it. So make sure if TestDisk doesnt work you use the IMPORT option... if its there like you say.

Tried that and "IMPORT" is not there, i can convert back to a basic disc but that means losing the data.

After reading lots looks like i have to try and find another XP Media Center Disc to install :( why cant NTFS on XP Home be the same as NTFS Pro AGGGHHHH) lol

Thanks for the other suggestion you gave i will try tomorrow, as my brother is at home and i am doing this over the phone now :(
