Depending on what speed you're on now and the area you are in, you can get an immediate free upgrade of your broadband speed now rather than waiting for NTL to roll them out...

http://www.ntlworld.com/data-feeds/editorial/microsites/tierMigration/

be sure to read the T&C's as there are caps in place although not strictly enforced at the moment.

750Kb -> 2Mb

1.5Mb -> 3Mb

Mod Edit: Have decided that this thread would be best in Misc...
It wont get lost in the crowd then.... 8)
It is gathering some interesting feedback that will be beneficial for us all... :wink:

Thanks for this info :)

I just checked through the T+C's but couldn't find anything about capping. Was it on another page?

Found it here:

ntl: home's broadband and dial-up services are intended for normal recreational or educational use by individuals and families and our pricing and network architecture have been designed accordingly. Customers who use the services more heavily than a normal home user will reduce the performance of the network for other customers.

"Normal use" of the service is defined as up to 1 gigabyte downstream of data transfer daily (which equates to approximately 200 music tracks, 650 short videos, 10,000 pictures or around 100 large software programmes downloaded per day).

* Excludes customers who subscribed to ntl's 1 Mb Broadband service with 3 Gigabyte monthly usage allowance on, or after, 8th March 2005. For more information about the 3 Gigabyte monthly usage allowance that applies to this service, click here.

Thanks, I already knew about the updates, but we had known since late last year, now they are finall being done, yay!

I thought there was 1 GB limit a day, and if you go over your speed is 56k for rest of day, but maybe they've removed that :?

I knew they were planning this too [not well advertised], but they must have hurried it through as BT are upgrading their own to 2Mb [widely advertised]

There is a 1Gb per day limit [cap], but that shouldn't be a problem for most users.

Thanks again for the info!

does anyone know if you do the upgrade does it affect the length of your current contract?
#7
It would only tie you to the twelve month contract if you are a new customer I think.

It does say that you can't alter your speed for 30 days once you've made the upgrade, but nothing else about longer contracts [as far as I know].

I think you will find most of the main ISP's are already doing the same anyway, others are about to do it to compete....

Some comment's about a simular ISP: Tiscali have already done this upgrading... 8)

it's a little crafty really, (using Tiscali as an example) they offer the 'free' auto-upgrades so they keep your full monthly fee, they don't offer you the new lower price & leave you at the original speed... 8)

They also state 'free upgrades', which is misleading as it doesn't cost anyway to upgrade to a faster BB package 8) Tiscali removed all reference to 'unlimited' in their package discription's but they left the 'always on' bit 8)

As for capping, the usual is now 30gb per calendar month, but they often invoke capping when the unofficial 1gb in a day is reached, the capping doesn't automatically come off neither, invoke it once & it can take days, if not weeks to get uncapped by going through CS... Tiscali also add the upload & download figures together when capping, not just downloads only like you would have thought... 8) (most ISP'shave added a clause so that they can terminate your contract if you consistantly download too much, after all, it's beneficial for them to have loads of very light users without the not so profitable burden of heavy user's)

I had 3 email's refering to my usage during the latter 5 month period, the T&C's then quietly got updated, then I got a termination of service notification, (I have recently got this overturned by blaming it on another user) :twisted:

To make it worse, faster speeds mean you do reach your capping limit twice as quick... 8) which is totally a waste of space to me, Mine is now a 1mb connection from a 512kb BB, so instead of technically spending umteen hours downloading beofre being capped to 56kb speeds, in effect, I can get capped in half the time then spend even longer per day at 56kb speeds...

At the end of the day, it's a way to offer a speed increase's without investing hardly any money as it's gained by capping customer's...

I have now got 'DU Meter' running all the time so I can keep an eye on my usage, otherwise, I guess it will be termination with no reprieve & Tiscali don't support migration neither :shock:

Note: ADSL users will have to check whether their BT exchange is capable of supplying the extra line speed required.... >>Goto This Page & input your Home number<< As, not all exchange's are upgraded yet!
