:x I am getting about 2 or 3 phone calls a day from companies and I am getting fed up, normally foreign people on the other end.
Is there any way to stop them?

The Telephone Preference Society's website is here:

http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

You can sign up there and it has other info on what to do if you're having junk call problems.

Also signing up to some websites for freebies or competitions or deals, if you leave your contact number, make sure you don't agree for them to pass on your information to third parties. Or leave a mobile number, which they might not want to use as it's more expensive for them + you can usually see who's calling.

i just answered the landline and it was a recorded message saying "u have won a holiday blah blah press 9" - someone warned me the other day about getting this as a text to my mobile but not to a landline grrr!!

very annoying... and if it's a con, many people are gonna fall for it

They are a con. I have had a few.
I don't normally listen to the whole thing but one said something like: 'Oh hi, um yes, my manager asked me to ring you and have won 1st prize .... blah, blah, blah ... all you have to do to claim your prize is send us a letter at this address, oh wait a minute as it is urgent you would be better of ringing us on 0870.......' :x

Another anoying one was a recorded message but when I put the phone down their end didn't recognise it so I couldn't use my phone for a few minutes until they had finished and hung up.

Arrrrrhhhhh, nearly Christmas....... :P

 Had about five of these :D But it's an 090 number (even worse!)

The bloke that announces that really has one of the most annoying voices + so obviously ungenuine. Soon as you hear him, you know he is trying to con you.

Oh how I would like to know his phone number!

You can MAKE MONEY from these nusiance callers. You get an 0870/0871 number to redirect to your house phone. You can give this to companies. Also, your friends and family can still ring on your geographical (cheaper) number.

we are registered with TPS - but have still been getting these calls - I understnad a lot of people are getting htem - a friend with CLI on his phone says he can't see who they're from but it shows up as International - hence TPS wouldn't make any difference !

Plus whilst I'm in the mood for a moan ! - how come I am registered withthe mail preference service to stop junk mail BUT the post man can still deliver that 'for the occupier' junk !! what's all that about ?

Also a friend tipped me off, not sure on accuraccy etc but for info:

On answering the phone, you hear a recorded message congratulating you on winning an all expenses paid trip to an exotic location. You are then asked to press 9 to hear further details. If you press 9 you are connected to a premium rate line that costs approximately £20 per minute. Even if you disconnect immediately, it remains connected for a minimum of 5 minutes costing around £100. (So don’t press 9)! You are prompted to key in your postcode and house number, which may have other serious consequences. After a further 2 minutes, you receive a message to the effect that you are not a winner. The call costs £260 in total. As the calls originate from outside the UK, BT and other telephone companies cannot take any action.”
