nuisance visitors - what's the best way to keep them out

I have an enclosed garden, half brick finished with fencing.
The problem I have is local children keep climbing in to my garden and also on to my shed roof.
A friend mentioned something called burglar tar, anyone heard of or tried it.
Any suggestions as to how I can stop them climbing in and dancing on my shed roof?

Do you know the children?

School holidays are too long.

Tell their parents. Most sensible solution.
They are no longer trespassers when you know that they are using your land but you do not do anything about it.
Also, you can be sued if you set "traps" that hurt a trespasser/visitor to your land.

Vandal paint or barb wire ? Both need a notice displayed though by law.

You could always tell them to f off or go have words with their parent.

Failing that, get a big dog !!!

Caught 1 first time tonight and found where they lived, spoke to parents and they have grounded them.

Do NOT put barbed wire on your property especially considering you havent even approached the parents!

Sorry to be Captain Obvious but I think you should find out why this is happening before forming a solution.

funnily enough we have a similar issue with the small garden fence though and trust me i have thought about an electrocuting wire fence!

hopefully u will get same reaction from other parents. My boy is 11 and so far all been good with him - but if someone ever came to my door saying he had been up to no good I would also punish him. Not all parents are bad and fingers crossed u get a supportive reaction

You are not allowed to set a trap but there are some pretty nasty thorny spiney shrubs you can buy. Pyracantha deters all but the most determined or stupid and is legal

Not all areas are the same.

Husband wants a big dog, but they'd probably climb in and pet it!

Secure your area fully. If you cannot do that, telephone the police next time that they trespass and direct them to the parents house.
#18
Anti climb paint Toolstation linky you are supposed to put a warning sign up by law, but I guess the brats must have nicked our sign as its nowhere to be seen what a shame, nowhere have I found guidelines on how big or visible the sign has to be though.

Just think of the rollicking their parents will give them for ruining their best shell suit!

We are on a corner plot with road running down side, so they tend to play down side of house, boredom sets in and the house becomes a target.
Don't know most of them and they usually run as soon as the door opens, I'm getting fed up of feeling like I should be constantly on watch.
We're aren't nasty people, just a married couple (no kids yet), there are a lot of kids that live round here as on a newish build area.

Main problem is finding where they live, as they disappear quick :(

The sign HAS to be of a suitable size and visible on all entrances and at various points around the site.

Police don't like getting involved.

They usually point you in the direction of the council anti-social behaviour team.

Have seen those plastic burglar spike strips but apart from leaving an indentation in their hands when they climb over I doubt they'd be of any use, electric fence would be good!

Apartments seem to be the best idea for couples without children.

Otherwise you are surrounded by the trampoline crew.

Like the Shell suit comment X) , sadly there seem to be more laws protecting the trespasser than the owner..typical !

Not any entry points, ours was on a fence that backed onto a private road, what defines suitable? our sign was the one linked in the link. In effect on private property, however they had previously used the fence to climb over and light the card in our green bin, it was close enough to the house to crack the window and warp a upvc frame, we never knew until the next morning though, literally all that was left was the axle, half a wheel and a pool of melted plastic the size of a tea plate.

When defending you family does the law really matter to most??

No, it doesnt. However, it should.

What is suitable? Put it this way, unsuitable would be a scrawled note on the back of a matchbox left on the floor. Copy of signs along the perimeter would be classed as suitable.

Do you know the children?School holidays are too long.
No, they come from all over the village so find it difficult to remember faces, and can never get a name.
Sadly this is a regular thing, school holidays just make it even longer :(
