Recovering bricked Shield

If you manage to brick the shield in a perpetual loop, you will need to recover it using this method.

Push down on the power button during boot, that will give you the option to choose recovery kernal, select that. Hit the power button again when you see the 'no command' to open further options - then choose wipe/factory reset.

This will factory re-set the Shield & allow you to boot it normally once more.

Sideloading App for windows

Handy little utility for sideloading from Windows PC - also good for backing up/restoring Kodi installations.

Instructions

For this to work, you first need to provide a "handshake" between your PC & Shield, by pluggin it in via micro USB (the cable which came with the Shield for charging the pad/remote will be fine).

Plug in & then on the shield, goto settings, about (under the device line). Highlight the Build option & click this several times until the developer option has been confirmed.

Exit settings & re-enter.

Navigate to Preferences then Developer Options (this is the new option you've just enabled).

Go to the debugging option & enable the USB debugging, network debuggin & verify apps over USB.

Now exit back to the home screen.

On your PC, open up the Nvidea ShieldTV Utility App. Click on file, settings & select the Conect via USB option. Save & Close. Click File & connect.

Exit app & re-enter. Go back into file, settings & now select the IP Address option (top line). Enter the IP address of your shield (you can find this on your shield in settings, network option). Again save & exit.

When you now select File & connect once again, a pop up message will appear on your shield. Confirm the message & you are now good to go for wireless APK installation & Kodi save/restores.

Guides

Streaming games from AMD GPU PC

Download this to your PC: http://kinoconsole.kinoni.com/#server

Then search the playstore on your shield for kinoconsole.

Run the PC server, search for games (wouldnt let me log into Google - wasnt a secure app apparently), but once games are found, log onto app on shield & the games pop up to play.

It's a bit hit & miss, some of the screen resolution is messed up on some games, whilst others are perfect.

Use the Amazon Fire app which is same (but different).... don't suppose you'd know if the Fire backup would restore ok to Shield.

yep - it's fine - have used it several times. Just use the files from Kodi_Backup

How do you get Ruya on kodi Chris?

Put the Ruya zip on a USB stick (via pic), then plug into the shield.

Go into Kodi & in the settings, add-on menu, install from zip file.

Select your USB pen, then Ruya zip file - it should install then mate.

Has anyone managed to get 5.1 from Netflix? No problem through Plex & Kodi

It's a problem with the Shield itself, for some reason it only decodes 2.0 instead of 5.1 for Netflix. I presume it can be fixed by a software patch, but Nvidia have known about this for a while and haven't acted yet.

It doesnt look like Amazon Video works either. I've side loaded it, loaded it up & logged in (all looks great). You can browse everything fine, but when coming to play a video, it gives you an error.

You'll have to connect micro USB from Shield to PC in order to get 'handshake'. Only once - you will get an option to always connect

Any instructions for this ? Plugged the shield into the PC, selected the USB option, but no joy.

Open up Developer options by pressing build number seven or eight times, then enable debugging in developer options

Buildnumber on the app itself (v0.08) ?

Settings>About> Click Build until you are prompted. Then Developer Options (next to Accessibility in Preferences)

OK, got the Dev menu & enabled debugging for USB & Network. Also enabled verify apps over USB.

Still when I click into the app itself & try connecting via USB, it opens up the console, starts daemon, then says "error: device not found".

Any ideas ?

I managed to brick mine earlier so it was no on a perpetual loop.
The solution is, push down on power button during boot, that will give you the option to choose recovery kernal, select that. then hit the power button again when you see the 'no command' to open further options - then choose wipe/factory reset

Brown trouser moment ?

I tried to put nova on mine earlier, but something didnt look right when launched, so I took it off again....

Ha,ha, - Not really - these systems are pretty 'unbrickable' unless you're flashing - can't see any reason why you would

I just need a way of getting the sideloaded apps on the main screen now.....may try Nova again tomorrow, but I've never been impressed with that launcher on other android devices.

Any other apps you recommend ?

I'll put a list up tomorrow in the main section about the apps I've tried so far, including which work fine & which are terrible.

Anything you guys input into this thread, I'll pick out & add to the first several posts to keep it all together :)

Thanks

You've probably encountered Sideload laucher' yourself - it works but it is pretty primitive

Yes, I wanted something like I have now, but allows sideloaded apps on the main screen.

I found s few things which suggested that Nova can be sideloaded & set as the default launcher (so it can display all the other sideloaded apps etc).

If you press the home button, it will ask you what default launcher you want (choose nova).

You can then set it up so one press of home takes you to Nova, 2 button presses to the lean back launcher (shield default launcher).

To do this, go to Nova Settings > Gestures and Buttons > Home Button, then in the "Choose action" dialog, go to the Shortcuts tab and choose Activities. Then scroll down to Leanback Launcher, press that and then press Home Screen.

With this set up, the first press of the home button launches Nova Launcher, the second press will launch Leanback Launcher.

Retrobox controller setup has stumped me. I can navigate to the point where a controller is seen asking me to map buttons, but there's no response. The required 'press any button 6 times to save configuration' works so I'm not really understanding the issue. At the moment I'm using Retrobox as an easy way to download roms and using individual emulators to load games from the Retrobox rom folder. I can't get controller for Mega man 7 to work though. Good fun though.

Right, this worked fine for me on the 360 pad, but for the Nvidea one, I had to use the Minix Air mouse to click each button first, then click the corresponding button on the pad to map it.

Looking at HALauncher, but it says it's not compatible with Android TV 6.0 as default launcher.

Is the Shield TV at that version yet ?

I've had 2 USB cheapish transmitter plastic housings (one for keyboard, the other Minix) come away leaving metal connector still in Nvidia USB ports. I just thought it's worth a mention as the USB ports are a very snug fit on mine

Same here. You tried HALauncher ? It's very similar to stock but allows sideloaded apps to be put on there as well.

Just don't know the android to version of the shield....

Did it work ? I'm trying to get to a point where I can swap between stock & another launcher with a double press of the home button.

Yeah it's fine. If you go to playstore it's there with a choice of others too. No need to sideload

Cheers. Can you set it as default launcher then ? Any easy way you can swap between them that you've found ?

I'll get on this later
