O2 parental blocking - any chance of cancelling? *Update: Contract Cancelled*

Little peeved with o2's blocking system. Stops access to lots of normal websites, and before anyone says it, no I don't look at "dirty" websites on my phone.

Just annoyed they have changed this without letting me know. I don't have a credit card and I'm not wasting my time explaining myself in an o2 shop.

I had to be 18 when I got the contract out, surely an opt in system would be better?

Love your honesty lol I thought it would affect everybody, seems stupid if its ok for pay and go and not contract.

You weren't browsing on wi-fi were you?

It is funny you should say this, I couldn't get onto urban dictionary yesterday…. came up with a message saying I had to pay £1 and they would unblock my internet to 18+ sites. MY argument is the same….. I am 23 and you have to be over 18 to be on a contract!!!

Ring up O2 and ask to remove the restriction. If you are over 18 it will be done within the hour.

exactly, betting websites are blocked, except williamhill (maybe o2 have a large stake with them) lol. They explained themselves saying that people buy contracts for their children? surely the parents could ask o2 to put a parental system on.

@Pugw$sh they want you to go into store and give proof or enter credit card details. Doesnt say you can do it over the phone

I would love to cancel my contract, 6 months in and I have to pay for the first time this month :( It'd be great to cancel and renew :)

Wow didn't know they were doing this, I just got the O2 message when trying to go to urbandictionary too. Good thing is that they'll charge your credit card £1 to verify your age and then refund you with a £2.50 credit on your bill, so it's not all bad.

you can also do the verification process direct on their site from any machine.

Hello,

I'm sorry you want to cancel your contract with us as you're unable to
access few sites due to our latest age verification process.

I'd like to inform you that we're asking our customers to verify their
age to ensure that the children are protected from inappropriate content
when using the internet on their phones. Please cooperate with us on
this as you'll only need to do this verification once.

Further, I've also set your account for disconnection on 04 April 2011,
which includes your 30 days notice period.

Your final bill will be generated within 2 weeks of the cancellation
date. In case if we owe you any money, please visit
http://www.o2.co.uk/finalbillrefund to claim your refund. If there's an
outstanding balance, we'll then request payment from your bank account
within 2 weeks.

Please don't cancel your Direct Debit until the final bill is settled.
Final settlement of any credit or outstanding amount is lot more faster
via Direct Debit.

In case, if you change your mind and want to continue using our
services, simply reply to my email. We'll then remove the disconnection
from your account.

I hope you'll consider using our services in future.

Regards

Ha ha dodge email! Very unusual for a company to sign mail off with "I hope" then regards O2 at the end. Should say "we hope"

She put her name, but I thought I'd keep it anonymous, and deleted it, so she doesnt get blamed lol. My email said along the lines of:

many websites (normal) i'm unable to browse and its made a detrimental change to my contract, i wish to cancel by my next bill date and they replied with that :). I'm on 12 month simplicity (ends in aug)

I have emailed to check, good point. No direct mention though
#26
Yeah, would presume your next bill will be for the total left on the entire contract
#27
Can't wait to see your final bill.

You can cancel your contract at anytime, but you get billed for the remaining months (less 10%)..

How many months did you have left on the contract? Which email address did you contact them with? Can you let us know what you said in your email to them?

August 2011 and I used the online form. I'm just going for some tea so I'll try to recall and post what I emailed. Although as it was on the online form I won't have an exact copy. I've emailed to confirm what they mean, whether it is an early termination or buying myself out of the contract.

I cant say exactly, but I said that the changes they have made have stopped me accessing many normal sites, and gave a list and told them this is unacceptable and has made detrimental changes in the contract. So i asked for my contract to be cancelled as the service provided is potentially different as I cannot remove the ban via their methods.

I have emailed them back to confirm what she means, Will find out tomorrow morning now.

I nipped into store tonight and changed mine on the system, I was the forth person to go in that day for that one member of staff…. took 1 minute of not less to sort it out.
#33
Some of you were right and they are charging me, I've emailed to clarify that I wish for early release or the ban to be removed, I'm not going instore, I dont live near one and it would be embarrassing, personally.
#34
They've just removed the content restriction when I gave them a choice :) cancel my contract or remove it :)
