Hi all,

Not seen any o2 retention deals on the site for a long time. I want to upgrade my phone to the HTC Desire which comes out on o2, apparently, end of April. I was wondering what the current retention deals are like. Anyone dealt with them lately?

Well O2 text me yesterday promising that all upgrades will be treated as a new customer so that should be ok .I am due an upgrade and was considering switching to Orange as I want the. Desire as well but as it's going to be on O2 I think I might wait.

Any retention deal from any network is based on your spend over the last 6 or 12 months, so deals tend to be customer specific to a degree. You can get an idea from other peoples offers, but you may not get exactly the same deal.

I cancelled my contract last week on O2, however they did try a little to keep me. Only really offered me the same deals that new customers get tried to haggle but they were not having it and just gave me my PAC code. TBH if they want to treat high paying customers like that then i'd rather not spend another 18/24 months with them. I took out the desire with orange.

With O2 I was on a 18month contract paying £35 a month.

I've been an O2 customer for about 8 years. I've been on sim only for the past 12 months or so because I have been waiting for a good upgrade. Last few months I have been going way over my allowance (with some international calls/texts). So I hope that I can get a good deal.

I found that before the iphone came out, people were able to get really good retention offers. And post iphone era, you get very standard deals.

Ive been with O2 from day one (back in the btcellnet days) because there coverage has been the best (Im in the south east) but I phoned to bail out last week and they couldnt care less. Also after the Desire.........

O2 are really poor for contracts. They offer horrendous tariffs on decent phones, and are getting outplayed by the other networks, especially with the higher end phones.
They're ok for SIM only and PayGo though.

yeah i've gotta agree with the sentiments here.....
o2 used to have fantastic retentions, now they're deals are pretty rubbish.
Best I've seen lately is them reducing the cost of the phone but same rubbish tariff.... and even then not for everyone.
To me, the way forward these days is probably to get the best sim only deal (either with quidco or e2save and similar) then buy the phone off ebay as cheap as possible. Worked out that for an iphone, buying off ebay and getting the o2 cashback 100 deal would save you like 150-200 over the 18 months.... quite a pretty penny!

Isn't the cashback applicable only for a brand new contract?? I am currently on the sim-only tariff and would like to keep my number you see. Is it possible to port the number over even though it's on the same network?

You wouldn't be able to transfer your number directly from contract to contract (same provider), however there a ways to get around this.

ie. Buy a Pay and Go sim from another network (most are free nowadays) and transfer your number over. Then take out the new contract on o2 and transfer the number back.

A bit time consuming and a bit of hassle but thats the only way Ive done it before

Thanks for that Krazie2004, some rep for you ;)

I spoke to o2 rententions yesterday. They had the phone listed for release end of April, but they told me that it has just gone to TBC... They couldn't give me any info on tariffs and told me to check once we have it in stock.

I'd like to stay with o2 but do like the sound of the htc desire deal from tmobile on here.
