The valuation of a good leader is not arrived at by his opening speech or promises but by how he performs his duties. Only time will tell.

I don't know if you were trying to be funny or not, but Babbabooey was correcting a grammatical error. It is bad grammar to say "A historic day" - it should read "An historic day".

I am not black nor am I American.
I fail to see why this would be a historic day for anyone who is not black or American..

Why would a black men becoming president of the USA be historic for a white man in another country ?
Fed up hearing this on the radio or seeing it on the TV.

Was Eminem historic for being a white rapper ?
Did we boast that the first man in space was white ?

Er, because it its still history. OK, it's not your personal history, but it is a hugely significant event.

I think i'll go with a NO on that one.

Did we boast that the first man in space was white ?

Why would we, when every other astronaut was white?
Now, the first black man in space is historic. Same as the first woman, monkey, dog etc...

This event has huge significance and thats why it has got such a lot of coverage.
Must admit tho that the cynical bit of me thought in term of 'good day to bury bad news,' and wondered just what else may have been happening that we didnt hear about

Thinking about it, if you are younger than Obama maybe you can achieve something of similar note by his age. If you are older just think what can be achieved if you put your mind to it and stop whinging
#23
I somehow doubt much will change of any significance to be honest, all rhetoric and Disney.

Yep, you're right Kippy, not a bad first day. Like a few others though I have a very bad feeling about this whole Obama thing. I really hope I'm wrong but I remember vividly the good feeling and expectancy of the JFK presidency :
"John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th President at noon on January 20, 1961. In his inaugural address he spoke of the need for all Americans to be active citizens, famously saying, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." He also asked the nations of the world to join together to fight what he called the "common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself." In closing, he expanded on his desire for greater internationalism: "Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you." source Wiki/Innaugral JFK

Let's just pray that the Obama presidency does not end in the same pool of tears.

one can only hope for the best, hotto. the good thing is he's being serious about the work at hand, resuscitating the US economy (housing problem and bank selling mortgages) which affects the rest of the world because like it or not all our economies are inextricately interwoven.

i feel his opponents even though some might want to obliterate him, might actually want him to be the fall guy if it goes all Pete Tong. he is the President after all, protected by some of the top bodyguards. My guess is everyone wants to wait and see how he can turn this around first. he is at least elected, which is more than i can say for Bush (or G Brown). and ... he is the best person for the job this time around!

I'm with you Hotto, but as D:ream once said "Things can only get better"
