http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/6671018/Obese-air-passenger-in-economy-seat-has-picture-taken.html

http://i48.tinypic.com/250nz4h.jpg

The picture, posted on an aviation blog, was reportedly taken by a flight attendant to illustrate to airline managers the difficulty of dealing with passengers who cannot fit into seats.

It is unclear if the man was aware his picture was being taken or whether the flight, on US carrier American Airlines, took off with the passenger spilling out of his seat.

Airlines already offer extended seatbelts to larger passengers to comply with safety rules but a number of carriers now insist obese customers buy an extra seat.

US domestic no-frills airline Southwest has a “customer of size” policy that insists passengers who cannot lower both armrests buy a second ticket which is reimbursed if the flight is not full.

American Airlines does not have such a requirement but urges passengers to “recognize ahead of time that they may need to purchase two seats”.

The image, apparently taken on a Boeing 757, was sent to writer Kieran Daly and posted on his blog at aviation news website, Flightglobal.

It is not clear if the image has been altered but Mr Daly wrote: “This is sent to me with the absolute assurance that it's a genuine picture taken by a flight attendant at American Airlines. The F/A took it to show her manager what was happening on the aircraft (757???) and why she was unhappy about it. Seems the guy paid for only one seat and the gate staff let him board.”

Comments below the blog entry illustrate the debate over how to deal sensitively with obese passengers while ensuring others have enough room.

In a statement, American Airlines said: "At this time American Airlines is unable to confirm whether or not the image referred to was taken by a member of flight crew but will investigate the situation internally to determine if any of the airline's strict policies were not correctly applied.

"American Airlines’ primary concern is for the safety and comfort of its passengers and crews and consequently passengers are advised to book two seats if they are concerned that they will require them. If a flight is not full, however, passengers' needs would be accommodated without charge wherever possible."

What do you think? Should overweight air passengers be forced to pay for a row of seats due to the inconvenience they cause for fellow passengers and air crew? Have you ever had any similar experiences.

Im guessing they should build maybe about 5-10 BIG seats for really overweight people?

if a situation occurs on a plane that has the absolute misfortune to be forced to crash land...........quick escape from fire...........................

its ultimately unsafe and people of this size should either be made to pay for 2 seats or business class which ever makes the aircraft's thoroughfare clear and safe
#9
I think he needs 3 seats
#10
Did they ever get the arm rest back?
#11
I had a flight to san diego sat between two fatties, it was horrible, their fat overspilled their seat allocation and was touching me!

They should be made to pay extra.
#12
Obviously someone of this size makes it potentially dangerous for other people on an aircraft.
Should probably have special seats to give better access, and unfortunately these would have to be more expensive.
If I was this size I don't know that I would want to squeeze onto an airplane:oops:

the clue's in the name: AMERICAN airlines. I'm surprised there's only 1 obese person in that pic.

I had a seat next to an enormous man on one trip and I was really uncomfortable. He took half my space and I couldn't move. Thankfully the air stewardess offered him a seat with spares on either side. It was embarrassing for me, no idea about him, he seemed oblivious!
#17
ooo hope it weren't a long journey for the guy, imagine having a nap, he'd topple over if he forgot to strenthen his right bum cheek to keep his other half balanced.

then needing to get up to let someone past, hold on that won't help :?
#18
if that pic is real how the hell would he go to the loo, how did the snack trolley go past???

how would he wipe his botty if he needed a poo:shock:

it was bad enough trying to change my DD's nappy!!!
#19
oh there's two empty seats behind him :?

I'm sure somebody who's posted on this thread will be able to tell me from their own experience : Do you have to pay extra if you're retarded?

Probably will, inevitably. Bit tricky tracking down the cheap seats I suppose.

Thought most people on here were too careful with their money to pay extra?
#24
they wouldnt have allowed that surely... he wouldnt be able to fasten his seatbelt?...

The airlines issue an add on belt to go around them, just imagine if an airline ever got a full plane of people that size.:w00t:

Against union rules - all items for the cargo hold must be loaded by Union personnel but due to health and safety they are not allowed to lift more than 15kg...:w00t:

BTW anyone noticed the tv screens? I reckon this picture is about 10-15 years old...

Yep -as others have said he's blocking the aisle. There's no way the staff would let him sit there...

anybody this size would have been in contact with the airlins and asked or just been given the seats with more room.......there are some on every aircraft:)

the plane would not have taken off like this as its blocking passageways and against health and safety regulations
#35
That is ridiculous of course he should be paying more and should never of been allowed to sit like that lol
How would they get the drinks trolley down the isle
#36
I personally find it ludicrous that the low price airlines have the cheek to charge you extra for having an overweight suitcase, or indeed charge you to take a suitcase in the first place, but let these fat******* fly without a blink of an eye, this guy clearly weighs 50-100kg's more than the average man, so by my reckoning thats:

75kg x £8 per kg baggage overweight = £600 extra this guy should be paying!

How would the hostess get the drinks cart passed? I am fairly tall and if I have an aisle seat I quite often get knee capped by the drinks trolley. Anybody sitting the wrong side of this guy would have to go thirsty I guess. And a flight isn't any good without a nice little drinky.
