I fully agree with this. They are a MUST.

Ye I'm in halls and they are supposed to be the most social out of all the accomodations available and I think the ear plugs will come in handy for sure. I'm driving up with response to the earlier comment of how I'm getting there.

Thanks to all the suggestions so far, I'm making a note as we speak although the french ticklers were sorted out weeks ago haha :p

Are you allowed your own kettle in your room then?

Dont bother taking an iron/kettle/toaster, everyone else in your flat will take them (if they dont then all chip in to buy them).

My no1 purchase kitchen wise was a plastic pan that you use for the microwave. Good for anything and doesnt get hot so you can take it out easily.

Would a freezer be a good idea?? My gran's a really good cook so I could stock it up with numerous supplies of cottage pie, lasagne, apple crumble etc. Mmmmmmm

You can do either. You can pick a temp on in store and use it right away.

Hey Choc, I thought you were a good cook having bought chef knives and wanting some high ended pans.

I am also guessing you are 39ish so you should be a good cook by now...;-)

make sure you shop around for food cos that will make a good deal of difference....especially on multi-buys.
Read Martin Lewis on downgrading by 1 tier on food to save you loads.
Try shopping at 3pm on a Sunday or 7pm weekdays.
You can get things like loaves for 16p and still soft or baguettes for 5p.

Am a great cook....if I say so myself and from my dinner party comments ;-), but you can't beat my mum's Jamaican dishes, she says mine taste great but hers have that finger licking quality....yummy :-D

ps am still 38 until bonfire night :p

i've just finished at Newcastle Uni, what halls are you staying in? Castle Leazes? I didn't stay in halls but everyone raved about how good it was there. If you want any advice just ask. With regards to travel tho it totally depends where your staying, if it is Castle Leazes or Richardson Road your within walking distance to uni so no extra cost. Don't worry about forgeting anything just remember all your personal items photos etc, anything else you can replace when you get your student loan(!) Make sure you join in as much as you can in freshers week cos not only will you have a wicked time and make most of your friends but you'll also get to see most of the bars and clubs, and the good and bad places to go.
Good Luck and enjoy yourself, Newcastle is a great city. By the way what are you studying?

Passport photos - there will be a huge queue when you all need them.
Driving licence - some places will still ID you when getting into a club even if you're in a group.
Bread, butter and marmite - you will be loved by your flatmates when you are all drunk and back home after a night out.
DVDs - same reason as above.
Laptop - can't live without it.
Money. Lots of it. In cash.
Fancy dress - eg pirate/beach wear like board shorts and flip flops/aviators etc for random nights with theme
At least 1x Plate, bowl, mug, spoon, fork, knife. Expect them to be broken/stolen/missing so nothing that nice.
Washing up liquid.
Dark coloured socks - never white or light coloured as they will look gross very quickly.
Washing powder - surprisingly social and good way to meet/chat up people
Duvet cover and pillow cases.
A smile. Everyone likes a smiley person.

I also agree with someone before - don't bother with electricals other than your own kettle as others will have them and if they are vital you can all chip in for it. If people have paid for it they are also more likely to respect it.
Remember that if you have a TV you will need your own TV licence which is over £100. Maybe worth getting one of the usb stick tv receivers so you can watch tv on your computer.
