From the today, the new price of the PS2 will be

$99 in America

99 in Europe

£99 in UK (surprise surprise)

This doesn't really seem like news anyway, the PS2's have been selling for under £100 for a while anyway haven't they?

That's interesting, the Euro symbol - € doesn't work in the OP. I wonder if it works in subsequent posts.

The PS2 has been sold for under £99, but the question that needs to be answered is "What was the RRP of those units being sold for under £99".
If it were £129 for example, then a £30 saving would be theoretically be available quite soon.
#10
Was this the big story that Sony was going to announce...how can they annouce this for a console that's been dead for quite a few years?

How many units per year does a console shift(or not) to be called "Dead" in your books?

"recent figures from market analyst NPD revealed that 206,000 units were shifted in the US during November 2008. By contrast, Americans bought about 378,000 PS3s during the same month." from: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/01/14/ps2_sales_milestone/ also: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/05/ps2_most_played_2008_nielson_yearly_roundup/ - Yup completely stone dead :giggle:

That article appears to be US$, and written yesterday?

the games are getting more and more disappointing for PS2. got the new tombraider in feb and finished it in no time. the graphics were poor compared to the gorgeous job they did on the big formats

From the article: "but there are no plans to reduce the UK price where it sells for GBP 99" and the price drop was announced yesterday here: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/03/31/playstation-2-will-be-available-for-under-100/

I personally consider a console dead if there's hardly any games being released for it (other than the occasional Fifa) and or if all the next gen consoles have been released.

I doubt the current crop of consoles will be around more than a couple more years, let alone it's predecessors.

It's a disgrace that they deem the PS2 only slightly cheaper than an Xbox 360, which is much better in terms of technology and modern features.
I think the PS2 was arguably the most overrated console to ever grace the gaming scene.

So a console that continues to sell tens of thousands of units is "Dead", Sony should employ you.

It's dead because it's not selling at the volume it previously sold in the millions.
Sony nor any other company no longer cares about the console, as not only have they stopped producing new games for it, but they no longer spend large sums of money advertising it or anything

The current crop of consoles are at the maturity stage, even the Wii sales are beginning to mature, which is why you'll start seeing prices being slashed/bundles soon and that's including the clever marketing.

The 360 is already in the maturity stage, which is why retailers are struggling to shift units and the PS3 isn't far from the maturity stage either, which is the successor to the obsolete and technically inferior PS2 console.

When was the last time you saw the PS2 being advertised?

It's 9 years old, I think that for them to expect to sell millions per year would be foolhardy and ambitious to say the least.

If they didn't "Care" about it, they wouldn't be producing it by the thousands, and they do produce new games for it, I think that you must be mistaking it for the Xbox which Microsoft no longer produce games for?

Why would they need to spend large sums of money advertising something that sells itself.

The PS2 is the best selling console in history, everyone knows what it is, so it sells itself, as it's "Arguably" the best console ever produced.

Not sure what the "Current crop" has to do with the PS2, it's a completely different market.
I don't know anyone that chooses between a PS2 or PS3.

I'm not going to even dignify that with a response but stop living on past facts, as you know we're talking about the modern era.

Have fun. :)

Translation = D'oh

Ask yourself this. "Why do Sony produce the PS2*".

Because they took out the backward compatibility on the PS3 ;-)

I never realised that they stopped producing them when they were backwards compatible.
So people were buying a £400 PS3 instead of a sub £100 PS2 before the 40GB PS3. Everyday's a school day.

It's because they weren't selling as well and Sony no longer care about it.

Next you're going to tell me that the PS1 is still alive because some people are still interested. :giggle:

No, that would be as ridiculous as your view on the PS2 being dead.

PS1 = No consoles produced since the PS3 was launched.
PS2 = Hundreds of thousands produced since the PS3 was launched.

The ps2 is a dead console because all it's getting nowadays are crappy ports from s**tware pumping devs and JRPG's from years back that have only just been translated.
#36
Blimey, Saint, did you get out of bed the wrong side this morning or what.

"Where it sells for £99", not the RRP.

That's nit picking over semantics and you know it. It has been sold for a lot less than that too, £99 is the current RRP. Well actually it's probably more like £96 with VAT as it is currently.

As for the rest of it ......I mean realfriendlyman wasn't exactly correct in saying the PS2's dead, but really was there any need to jump on each other like that? I think I already proved your point with this earlier post anyway:

It's still selling by the bucket load, it's by no means dead. It's just going for a different market now, hence the price drop. As they did with the PS1 Sony are now looking to the young market, the under 10's who can't persuade mummy and daddy to drop £400 on a PS3 but can get a £100 PS2 after a bit of a tantrum. That's why we all think the latest PS2 games as toss, they're not aimed at us. We are supposed to have moved on to PS3, or so Sony would hope.

Any serious gamer would consider the PS2 dead years ago, regardless of sales figures and it seems to sell in shops for waaaaay below the new pricedrop.

The Saint was just going on stupid but maybe that's why no one likes him. :)
