Quite a few people have one of these and there're so many deal threads with loads of posts on it's hard to keep up.

Here's a place for any queries, problems and suggestions.

I have 2 - One as an HTPC in my front room running xbmc and one in my office running WHS 2011.

This wiki is THE resource for HP MicroServer users. It has an easy to search list of compatible hardware etc.

http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/HP_MicroServer_N40L_Wiki

I have added this for new users who find searching through the 2000+ posts on this thread difficult.

Enjoy your new HP MicroServer and please post your results here and to the wiki site for the benefit of us all.

If I set up a microserver with whs can I add harddrives easily at a later date (basically plug and go)?

I have a prepaid visa with a hundred quid on it and using the cashback I'm thinking I could get 2x2tb drives to go with the server at no real extra cost. Also what would be the 2tb drives people would recommend?
1 Like #6
You can't 'hot plug' them, but yeah, turn it off, plug hdd in, turn on. Whs will then ask if you want to add the drive to the pool. Couple of mouse clicks and you're done

How about a nice guide to setting one up like you have Sancho1983?
Want to get a couple but don't know where to start, i have ordered all the components however.

Here's a pretty comprehensive guide that shows the ins and outs of the server. Plus how to install WHS as well as mentioning some of the other popular software people use on them.

Any other specfic questions just ask. DCX has a couple and DGA also uses them - And they know their stuff

Quite a guide indeed. The day my WD My book dies then this will be next.

Do you guys leave them running 24/7? I know my WD has never been off but then it is low power consumption, this is probably the same that way?
#10
The one I use as a server is on 24/7, they're touted as 'low power' but I can't say I've ever actually checked the cost. It's worth it for the flexibility you gain
#11
Do you guys leave your 4 HDD's spun up 24/7?

Currently debating whether I should, as they currently power down after 90 minutes of inactivity. Drives rated to 300,000 Start/Stop cycles though I can't help but have the old stigma of the bearings giving way during spinning up. Though apparantly this is no longer an issue.

Only issue is the lag in waiting for the RAID Array to spin up to access.

Am looking for a new graphics card as the one I have is ATI and I'm having problems with xbmc.

Anybody know of a good deal on a GT 520 which will fit in one?

Yes i would like to know the best one for this machine. any thoughts from owners that have already purchased cards.

I bought one of these in the end.

Seems to be working well, certainly better with xbmc than my old one

I've got one, still untouched and will be until HDD's come down. Would have been done ages ago but by time someone told me the correct graphics card to use ( thank you DCX!) the HDD price went through roof. I'd love to get this up and running

What other parts you bought Sancho?

For the one I use for my server, 4gb RAM (Here, although I paid £14.49 for mine)

And some hard drives from a previous server, before the cost shot up.

For the one I use as an HTPC I have bought;

4gb RAM, same as above
The graphics card I mentioned above
USB sound card (here) as my amp doesn't do HDMI, this provides the optical connection needed.

My plan was to run Win7 media centre with a dual tuner HD card in it (Blackgold £120+ when I looked)) so I installed Windows a few months ago. I've recently got a pretty good Sky deal though for the next 12 months, so I have just installed xbmcbuntu alongside Win7. All works great so far (although I can't get menu sounds, haven't investigated much)

Hey, has anyone got any recomendations for a remote to use with this / WMC for example? Cheers :)
#21
i'm thinking of getting a slot loading dvd or bluray drive.

would a slim one leave enough room to mount a 3.5" drive next to it?

Bought cheers!

You stuck a drive in the top bay? Not sure whether to stick the 250 in there or not tbh

Wasn't sure whether to put a BR writer in or something for option but then I can't really see why I would do that tbh. What adapter did you use? Might pick one up and get this project started

Ordered! Cheers chaps!

Just need HDD prices to drop now!

Would this be a good time to say I just fitted mine today but haven't tested yet.

Got to say, it's quiet anyway.

Might as well, keep all the data bays free for storage drives. First thing I did with mine after flashing the modded bios)

Ditto, though ive still not got round to migrating the drives from my old server to my spare microserver, though it wont be long before thats essential. Its surprising how easy it is to fill 8TB with downloads and backups.

ZFS is the business when it comes to migrating pools of data, it is also Swahili to those who have never experienced it.

Yeah I need to find Win 7 cheap...plus HDD's obvo though tbh they can wait. I refuse to pay hugely over the top prices for them

What's sickbeard? Sounds like a dodgy porn site lol!

EDIT - looks very interesting that! I'll worry about that when done though
