I'm assuming it's happened at last as my internet has been cut off as bt aren't providing the service anymore because they either haven't been paid or redten have ceased trading, I can only assume they've ceased trading. Can't get onto mse with the mobile so wondering what the word on the street was? Assuming we get to keep the free pc and don't have to keep paying the clode funding loan? Apologies if it's been posted but as I said, I'm on the mobile.

Ok guys,

Have decided to move the debate back here seeing as MSE have started deleting posts. We can discuss the issues with Redten etc here but please try to refrain from making accusations, ie we can talk about taking Redten to court however please don't say things like "what they have done is illegal". This will mean that our posts should remain and we can best decide what action we need to take.

Welcome to any new users to HUKD. Please feel free to register and posts your comments.
Thanks.

Redten Internet customers kept waiting
Still negotiating to find replacement for computer supplier Watford Electronics

Andrea-Marie Vassou, Computeract!ve, 13 Feb 2007
Redten was using PC's supplied by Watford
Customers of ISP Redten Internet are still awaiting confirmation of the firm’s new computer partner following the demise of former parent company Watford Electronics last week.

On its website the ISP, which supplies people with free computers when they sign up to a £20 per month broadband contract, continues to say it has run out of “free PC’s”.

It also says as a result of this “the broadband with free PC offer has therefore been temporarily suspended. We are currently working hard to fulfil all existing orders and hope to be in a position to reinstate the offer soon”.

A spokesman for Redten Internet told Computeractive: “We have been in negotiations with a number of potential partners but are unable to provide further information at this point."

Despite being closely linked with Watford Electronics successor Globally Limited, Redten Internet has not confirmed a new computer deal with them, saying: “We will have to see what Globally Limited has to say, before we make a decision."

Watford Electronics entered administration last week, owing almost £8m, after 35 years in the industry.

According to sister title CRN, Redten was created to be Watford Electronics "get-out clause [to help it out of financial trouble], but it didn’t really take off".

Got my mac, similar problem with pc. Very noisy fan, they wanted about 20 quid in shipping costs to sort it so not bothered. Do we still get warranty on the pc? Assuming we get to keep it? Technically the contract has ended early so they could ask for it back but will they bother? We don't have to pay the clode loan do we? Redten said before that we didn't if this happened, they are covered by the consumer credit act which I believe makes clode joint liable therefore we don't have to pay.

How strange??? You'd think that bt would have a different message then and wouldn't give me a mac. All sounds a bit fishy!

There's not much on MSE yet

From MSE

I have a bt wholesale Notice of termination of service stating Redten has either repeated non payment or ceased trading..either way i have no adsl service.. Any suggestions on what to do next gratefully recieved. Also no pickup on Tariqs 0871 number. Good luck all!

My OH just phoned me from home. She has been using the internet today, but after lunch time can only get a BT Wholesale webpage stating (paraphrase) that RedTen have repeatedly not paid bills and have been disconnected from the network. We can get a MAC code, or just leave it and be disconnected in a couple of weeks. Lovely. They're still trading on the internet and their page makes no mention of any problems, but I def wouldn't connect with them now! Not looking forward to going home to no internet!!

I tried signing up to try the process and afer the bit where you enter your number for availability it says error.

we are tied into bt for option 2 until may 7 so can anyone recommend a service with 1 month contract??
#9
Doesn't look like good news either way, anyone phoned bt to see if they are indeed upgrading and it's just a badly worded automatic message that they've put up? Hope it doesn't cause any problems that I now have a mac.

I haven't used any of them so can't recommend any sorry

With1 monnth contracts you usually find that you'll be charged the connection fee that Openreach/BT charges your service provider. It's around £50.
#12
I did a one month no contract offer from aol before, complained and got two more months free then left. not sure if they still do that offer, thinking of either going back to them or tiscali? Any other suggestions?

http://www.plus.net/

Try us for 90 days!
Switch to PlusNet broadband from another provider and you've got 90 days to try us, risk-free. If you want to leave during that period, we'll refund you your subscription payments.

When you choose any of our broadband products for your home, you can agree to the 90 day guarantee during registration. If you're happy with the PlusNet service during the 90 days then your broadband account will continue to work and you will be billed as normal. If you are not happy with the service and your account is closed within 90 days then we will refund your subscription payments.

I have been with them for nearly three years without any issues.
#14
Be careful folks, if the bt message is a ruse then using the mac to migrate could render you in breach of contract, most firms have a clause in contract allowing small downtime for upgrades/repairs etc
#15
No news about this on thinkbroadband, there normally quite qucik for stories like this. (ISP's hitting the wall).

Mine is coming up with a different message now (unless it's something to do with my 3g modem but I don't think it is as that's working fine.) Mine now says it may be that the service is changing and will be back soon. So they might not have gone bust after all. Wonder if that's true then will BT be in trouble for saying they had gone bust or hadn't been paying their bills?
#17
I have just got off the Phone to Clode 08448 444700 and the woman said they had no information other than what customers were telling them, she gave me a number for additional support set up especially for this: 08444 820000 but she told me it would take at least 25 minutes to get through, I have cancelled my direct debit today and have sent a letter to clode stating that as the company had ceased trading i would not be paying any monies outstanding and that clode need to take Redten to court to claim back the money.

Thanks for the info and welcome to hukd!

Im still getting the original message saying Redten have either not paid their invoices or have ceased trading. Direct debit has been cancelled in case they actually have gone down the pan, which is no big deal as they are not due payment for three weeks so if all does return to normal (chances on that are looking slimmer) it can easily be re-instated.

I have the email address of the person who I believe to be redtens account manager at clode retail finance, I have just sent an email asking for further information of the situation as we are all unsure.

nicola.dobson (at) cloderetailfinance.com

Please dont send abusive emails though be reasonable as from what I gather they are having trouble getting in contact with redten themselves and are just as much in the lurch as us, and if push comes to shove its them we need on side as we should be covered by the consumer credit act.

I hope it's not Fast4 internet have a look on google how poor they are will not be happy if they swap over.

Oh dear!

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/telecommunications-services/fast4/1014344/

"Fast4 should be the last4 your internet access!

Summary: Avoid if you use the Internet a lot."

This is why they are swapping, obviously Fast4 offer a cheaper service than BT but at the cost of quality. I wonder what would happen if we got cut off, would we have to pay and/or give the pc back? We signed up to an unlimited service and it should still be unlimited, if they decide to cut us off because they want to enforce a limit then where do we stand. They would not be providing the service that I signed up to so I wouldn't expect to pay, they could take the pc back but it's basically worthless now anyway. Under the consumer credit act they'd still be liable for the lack of service so would either have to provide or not get any more money wouldn't they?

Still, it does seem strange that BT would put such a slanderous message up to say they've either gone bankrupt or not paid them if it wasn't true. Maybe they're refusing to pay BT for last month or something? Only way I can think that BT would put that message up as it would then be true.

We contacted BT for verification and it told us in a statement that it "can confirm that Redten Ltd's service has been terminated as a result of its failure to meet its financial commitments with one of BT Wholesale Broadband's customers (BT Wholesale White Label Managed Services).

That's the interesting bit, this is no mistake from BT, Redten haven't paid up but we can assume are still trading. Wonder why they haven't paid, maybe in financial trouble, or possibly in dispute and BT have stopped the service and also maybe wanted to give Redten a bit of stick at the same time?

Hi to all,

This has been a difficult time with Redten. I have read and re-read a lot of forums as the best course of action to take. Like most I have not been able to get in touch with Redten. Even some numbers I managed to get that are not listed!! These numbers are now disconected or the ever depressing music is playing.

My plan at this time is to still pay the money to Redten via Clode finance. Reason is that if Redten goes in to adminstration then the whole contract will be void and the creditors will sort out the mess?

Next I have taken the MAC offered by BT and I am in the process of sighing up with Orange home max service. For those of you who are intrested for £24 I get a total phone/mobile and broadband package. This convently replaces and improves my current set up for the same price.

If by chance Redten does come back on line then I will contact them and ask for the RMA number so I can return the "free" computer and that will be contract over and done with.

The statement on the Redten portal also does not make sence to me as I checked and the exchange that I am conected to is not due to up grade until 2010 as it is a teir 2 exchange.

I am hoping this is a solution that will work for me and hopefully help others out as well.

One more any one who has got the MAC will see that though a MAC should be valid for 30 days BT has limited this one to the 17th of this month!!

All the best to all affected out there.
#26
Welcome to hukd Ron!

Don't think it matters that the exchange is not being upgraded at this point, I think they are moving over so that when the upgrade happens it can be done instantly, ie I don't think we'll see any improvement in service until after the contract expires anyway!

If that date is right then 8 days downtime is an unacceptable level of service, which should give a get out of contract option.

I know what you mean but personally I think they'd get away with it. I think it's disgusting that the service has been interrupted at all but I think they'd get away with 8 days unfortunately. Other people have been told it'll be back by Friday so we'll see!

HOT INFO

Redten is out of bussiness!! Your MAC code has already been used to transfer the service to NJP Services (back bone provider for Fast4net). I have spoke to them in the last 5 mins and had confirmed that the service will recomence on the 18th.
New service is [B]2MB AND LIMITED WITH ONE MONTH CONTRACT AT JUST UNDER £10.
[B].
So Redten is in total breach of contract. By providing a lower service to what we had. I will now wait to see if Orange phone me because they should not be able to use the MAC.

Contact no is 08714240185. Very polite and helpful (so far).

Also 38 customers could not be transfered if you call they can confirm. Asked question about finance and they are getting back to me as they were unawere of the finance agrement we have.

A bit of info coming out on MSE now.

Thanks for the info Ron. May I ask how you know Redten are bust? What do you mean £10 a month, we only have to pay £10 a month now rather than £19.99?
#35
Ron, are you on MSE too? It's probably worth keeping all info and debate in the same place to save everyone keep checking both sites. Someone has quoted you on MSE, I've called them too and put my details down.

NJP Services told me that Redten are out of bussiness.

I am original customer when Redten launched in 2006. Got computer and good service up to now and paying £19.99 a month for it.

RedTen snags lifeboat after being cut adrift by BT

Customers of RedTen Internet could have their connections restored next week after being left high and dry when the ISP had its connection cut by BT.
Customers trying to log onto Docklands-based RedTen on Monday were redirected to a BT website carrying the message:
BT Wholesale has stopped providing a service to RedTen Communications Ltd either because of repeated non-payment of invoices or because RedTen Communications Ltd has stopped trading. This means you will no longer be able to access your broadband service from RedTen Communications Ltd.
BT offered customers a MAC (migration authorisation code), which would enable them to transfer their connection to another provider.

BT told The Register today that RedTen had been cut-off "as a result of its failure to meet its financial commitments with one of BT Wholesale's broadband customers."
A spokesperson in RedTen's technical department told The Register the firm was "upgrading the servers from 8 megabytes to 24 megabytes".
He refused to comment on whether RedTen had failed to pay its invoices, and urged customers not to use the MAC code offered by BT.
He said that the service would return on either Thursday or Friday.
But Peter Kaye, director of NJP Services, a company which sells wholesale ISP services based on BT's network, confirmed to The Register on Thursday that his company would reconnect RedTen Internet's customers on 18 March.
He said customers would continue to receive the same service as before: 8Mbps downstream bandwidth with no maximum limit on data.
RedTen Internet had made its name by offering free laptops to its customers. It offered up to two PCs per customer as a reward for signing up to its broadband service, which carries a hefty three-year contract.
Customers remained divided over whether they are legally entitled to cease their payments to RedTen. Payments are made to a separate finance company based in Cardiff.
One Reg reader, who was among several who brought the issue to our attention said: "Yes I know that you're thinking, why the hell did he sign up with that bunch of cowboys, but two laptops at 30 quid a month is/was a bargain."
Indeed, it seemed like one hell of a bargain. For just £17.99 per month, RedTen offers an 8Mbps service with a free modem and a free Toshiba Satellite Pro notebook. Users who pay £28.99 a month are offered two free laptops. Some customers have received their free laptops while some are still waiting.
"They'll not be getting back their free PC that they supplied!" another reader told us.
In a email sent to customers on 26 February, RedTen said it had received "numerous" complaints about the quality of BT's service and that it was searching for another provider. It said at the time it was speaking to Opal Telecom, owned by Carphone Warehouse, which has its own broadband deal in which it gives free laptops to customers.
On 6 March RedTen sent another email, warning customers that an upgrade to a 24Mbps platform would cause a total loss of email stored on its servers. Just four days later, the service was disconnected.
For a young company, RedTen has a complicated past. It was set up in 2006 under the umbrella of retailer Watford Electronics, which went into administration in February 2007. Many of Watford Electronics'assets were bought out, but RedTen continued to trade as a separate company.
Kaye, as RedTen's new supplier, said he was not concerned by BT's statement that RedTen had not paid its bills.
He said: "Our contract is a new one. The dispute with BT is down to them. We have already run a risk assessment on that business. They are having no financial problems to my knowledge. We will work with customers as best as we can."
