Old Desktop PC - Recycle / Tip?

xcookx Avatar

What do people tend to do now with old desktop PCs? I've had a go at cleaning it up and basically wiping it (the hard drive), but with no disks or any original documents etc, would anywhere take it off my hands, or is the tip the best idea?

Bulky monitor, windows XP, parts that are no longer available to buy basically!

Don't chuck it! Try eBay? You'd get a tenner with the monitor

Freecycle someone will take it off your hands no problems www.freecycle.org

We have a guy on ours regularly takes old pc's and/or parts and rebuilds them installs an OS and then puts them back on Freecycle

Where you at? I'll take it off you just to see if I can recover any thing off your hard drive 8-) did you do about 10 passes on the hard drive?

what is it?

ebay w/ local pickup
gumtree
cheapcycle
local freeads

best selling locally as those CRT monitors weigh a tonne.

if you can be bothered then you could probably sell each part individually on ebay (ram, motherboard, hard drive, etc) but only if they're not too old.

It's about 5 or 6 years old according to the OH. Think I'll take it to bits and get rid of the hard drive.

If you do, dismantle the Hard drive and take the magnets out, they are great! I have them all over the house, they are rare earth and when you get two stick together impossible to seperate without tools. Even without the hard drive someone will take it on freecycle.

I skipped* two PCs recently, couldn't be bothered trying to profit from them - Both pre 2000 :p

Took to the local dump and disposed of them sensibly in the electronics section.

Local charitys use old pcs. Womens aid and blind centres. They are always glad of them.
#26
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I've tried in the past with charities but they never seem to take electrical items. Will take it apart and see what's in there.
#27
Freecylcle them as people are always after second pc's for the kids etc

Any of my friends who are getting rid of pc's always give em to me, I strip em down, make them worthy (add a new HD / Ram) and then flog them for the cost of the parts. I just sold a dual core 1.6 (i think) with a 120GB HDD for £40 to someone after a pc for the kids homework.

If the pc works fine, see if local groups want it, we have a couple of local groups here that do free pc lessons for people so are always after pc's
