I would of thought it was odd if Iraq was leading the medal table... China finished second in the table in 2004...

Could tell that particular fireworks display was fake when I watched it live.

Why are people really that bothered?

Good thing iran aren't hosting the olympics.. we'd all be in trouble then. They wouldn't use fireworks.
#15
They'd destroy us with their nuclear skills.

ye sure, well done for watching sky news. i dont understand the quite abrupt transition you made from fireworks to irans nuclear weapons , was it meant to be a joke ?

"But most of the audience thought it was filmed live - so that was mission accomplished."

lol, punkd at its best

the flying arrows - the pinnacle of british acheivement, warplanes that exhaust colourful fumes. considering all the money we have wasted on illegal invasions and the subsequent financial crisis this country is in i am suprised the IOC are not making a back up plan just as FIFA are with poland and ukraine following their inept progress in getting the stadia ready for Euro '12. london has not built anything substantial of what was planned for 2012 since winning the hosting rights

My experience of China and Middle East UAE when I was working abroad was that big construction projects could be completed in weeks or months. Here they would still be filling in the health and safety forms :)

"Organiser said that the footprint fireworks were there for real, but thought it unsafe to try to film them - so they recreated them instead." It wasn't a complete fake, just a careful staging for TV. It might have been 'worse' had Speilberg continued in his role! And no surprise that China leads the table. With the effort they've put into making this a huge success, it will be no surprise either if they finish the Games as overall leader instead of 2nd like last time.

Wouldn't surpise me if it was faked!!! Look at everything else that come out the country!!!!!!!

Ah its brilliant to read such arrogant remarks about anything foreign in this forum... anything chinese is fake, polish is this, asian is this and that.. and so on... People dont even read the news articles properly.. thats how easily some1 gets influenced...people even doubt if a chinese athelete wins a medal.. great going, shows signs of top notch western thinking!!

The fireworks were carried out live... they were performed during the olympics, just the ones showed on TV were pre filmed (with added CGI.. cant really say fake, as the foot prints were performed live!)... no where did they say the fireworks were live.. we all assumed it was!!! So next time look at all the facts, read things properly before talking nonsense!!

Not just western thinking...........some chinese thinking too. From the same article:

The ceremony has also been strongly criticised by architect Ai Weiwei, who helped design the Bird's Nest stadium.
Writing on his blog, Mr Ai described the ceremony as "a recycling of the rubbish of fake classical culture tradition; a sacrilegious visual garbage dump and an insult to the spirit of liberty; low class sound play that's just noise pollution".
He was directly critical of China's ruling communist party, characterising the ceremony as "a showcase of the reincarnation of the Marxist imperialism; the ultimate paragon of an all embracing culture of fascist totalitarianism; an encyclopaedia that encompasses total defeat in intellectual spirit."
