Here is a beautiful story of compassion and solidarity with those fleeing war and oppression.

A team of 10 refugee athletes who will compete at Rio 2016 were welcomed with cheers, music and dancing when they arrived in the Olympic Village on Wednesday (3 August).

Hundreds of athletes from other countries were there to greet the refugees at a special welcoming ceremony, joined by media from all around the world.

Huge respect and good luck to them.

How on Earth do we have such a division in this country between how we view refugees competing in an Olympics.
Is it something to do with natural empathy, or upbringing? A young girl who flees a war-torn country with her sisters, swims for freedom and then looks to compete in an Olympic games can actually be viewed by some people as a coward?
Is that what this country has now become?
Look after number one first, How about getting a homeless guy off the streets and send them to the Olympics?.
Unless they're a migrant of course.
Sometimes I don't recognise your views as being part of what I associate with Great Britain. I don't even know if I'd call them a throwback to be honest. They're just so antithetical to what I associate with being good about this country.

I don't understand why you're so pro refugee and seem hell bent on bringing so called Syrians to Europe, Even when they have caused civil unrest virtually everywhere they go along with multiple terrorist attacks.

Look at what migrant teenagers did a week ago

Yet its gone unreported by the bias media.

When they stop blowing themselves and others up I'll show them some empathy, Until then I'd rather eat my own faeces.

Bit of a drop in the ocean, but doubtless it'll give some a nice warm feeling while they forget the millions of other less fortunate refugees, many of whom may be more aware of where their next attack will come from than their next meal. :(

I'd imagine the odds of being killed for participating in the Olympics is probably lower than fighting for/against their country.

Nothing like getting your priorities right though, is there.

Shall I fight for my family and country or shall I try to win a medal at the Olympics?

If you were a gay male in a country that jailed (or killed homosexuals) who exactly would you be fighting?

I'm not sure that you know how far away from the mainstream your views are, to view refugees with such a callous lack of empathy is very strange and extremely right wing.

If we have a war and your unarmed family run away from armed murderous people to save themselves then they will be refugees.

Is that leap in imagination really so difficult to make?

Thanks. I'd be interested to know if this has ever happened before. I always thought that the Olympics was based on Countries rather than grouping of people.

From that point of view why should anyone bother with the Olympics or any other sport for that matter.

Billions of people take part in sports and don't get tangible results afterwards, are they all wrong too Stuart?

Why do some people criticise people who are trying to achieve greatness? These are refugees fleeing some of the most dangerous places on Earth yet they're still capable of doing something most of us could never dream of.

That deserves praise. It represents the very best ideals of the Olympic games and yet some people can only criticise.

I think there's a slight difference between people living in a country in the midst of a civil war, and Britain in the 1940s. X)

Is it something to do with natural empathy, or upbringing? A young girl who flees a war-torn country with her sisters, swims for freedom and then looks to compete in an Olympic games can actually be viewed by some people as a coward?
