OMG I dropped the LCD TV - seriously! How much for new panel?

Would you believe it, last night as I was trying to wallmount the 32" LCD I got the kids for Christmas - the panel fell over and cracked the screen, and no I hadn't been hitting the mulled wine - not at that stage :-)

It was a 32" Toshiba from Richer Sounds with Panel protection. I check their policy and it doesn't appear to cover accidental damage, which is fair enough - although I thought someone had reported in another thread that it did but I couldn't find that thread.

Started new home insurance policy last week and I remember a clause that seem to imply no claims in first 14 days.

My last resort is The Visa Card which seems to cover items not covered by other insurances - would this apply in this instance??

Any idea how much it would be to get a new LCD panel for this TV? Is it economic to repair these items or have I just thrown away £279. Thought the deal was too good to be true! Can I cancel the 2 week old Panel Protection from Richer sounds and at least recover £30!.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

A new panel will cost more than a brand new tv in the shop.

If you took house insurance out 1 week ago but cant make a claim for 14 days then wait another week or 2 then claim???

If you have house content insurance wouldnt that cover it?

OR you could say you received it damage? unless you've had it for a few days

I was afraid it wouldn't be repairable. I'll check through the details again of the home insurance. Looks like the policy I took only had £100 excess - I thought I had made it £250 to lower insurance cost.

If I do claim on home insurance - will this have an impact on my insurance costs going forward - will I claim £180 but insurance will go up by £200 per yaer for next 5 years?

You're better off in the long run if you just replace the tv yourself rather than involve insurance companies/visa, as at the end of the day you will end up paying more through your premiums or your APR if you do.

Yes it will adversly effect your policy, if you had no claims discount from before that will go, and you'll find that you'll have to pay a higher premium when you next renew to make up for the costs they incurred

I was afraid that was the case. Any ideas what happens if I claim off Visa? Or if I'm even entitled?

I know it was my fault, but I seem so surrounded by insurance I thought I might be able to recoup some money.

If you go through your insurance then you are making a fraudulant claim. Can't believe that so many are encouraging you to break the law. :? Don't think your credit card would be liable in your case of accidental damage. You might have to take this one on the chin ( and the wallet ) I'm afraid.

I seem to remember the Barclaycard insurance covered you for virtually anything.
I can still picture ( I think ) John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson advertising it.
Though not necessary at the same time.

Or did I dream all that. :?


Credit cards usually cover you only for fraud (goods not arrived) or when you reach a stalemate trying to get a refund under the SoGA. If a card issuer is offering extra insurance for nothing, then it is card specific and you are going to have to read the small print to see what is actually covered.

Eek, I did this once, but managed to drop it as we came in through the front door. Smashed all over the steps and everything. We WERE covered on our home insurance though, and they didn't laugh at us too much. I would imagine your only option is home insurance, and if there is a clause excluding claims in the first 14 days (which sounds a bit dodgy to me) then you're stumped. I'd be giving it a go anyway though, we got a new telly (delivered!) and our premium didn't go up. Nor did it go up when we had a flood upstairs and needed two new carpets and some replastering. It did however go up by more than 10% after all the floods across the country (which we are nowhere near).

Credit card claim, if u used a Nationwide credit card to purchase the item, then u have 100 days from purchase in which u can make a claim. No its not fraud claim either, its accidental dmg, lost or stolen.

Just call them up and ask for a claim form. Just PM me if u need help.

I really don't agree with doing anything fraudulent.

Not saying you should do this but you could claim to Richer sounds it was broken when you opened it, you never know they may have so many returns and whatnot that they just take it on faith.

I purchased a TV as a gift from John Lewis and it was broken when unpacked (not the screen but the TV just wouldn't work). I had the same model so could confirm the plug worked so JL initially wanted to repair it but I said that wasn't acceptable with it being unused so they are replacing on Wednesday.

choose the "purchase protection" claim form, and print it off.

They are the insurance underwriters for the N/wide purchase protection. They will be dealing with ure claim.
