our 2 and 1/2 year old son has managed to scrach the living daylights out of the tv screen....
We have put a claim in with our home insurance and the have offered us a figure of £450 for our TV and the voucher will be for Comet.
The previous TV was a 37" LCD only 2 years old and we paid about £600 for it. My dilema is should and can we wait for the January sales when we we will hopefully be able to get a bargain?? or do we have to spend it straight away.
Although the TV is bad, it is really only visible when its on a dark screen...in other words..I'm sure I can hang on till January, but will this be possible?

We just got an insurance claim through a few weeks ago, card to spend at comet only. It lasts for a year once activated so shouldn't be a problem

I would just look on here for a few weeks, you should be able to get a good TV for £450. Just remember that the VAT goes back up in January as well if your gonna wait until the new year sales :)

Have you not queried this with them? If they are saying you have to use Comet, then ask them to find the same model with Comet at the amount they have said they are going to pay you, and you'll be happy to accept this. But at the moment, the amount they have said they are going to pay you isn't enough to get you the same tv, especially at the prices Comet charge.

I will have to spend the voucher at Comet though...and as we all know, they are not the cheapest shop in the land.

My insurance said that for that price (£450) you can get a model which has the same spec as my current TV...so I'm sort of stuck with that.

If it's the same as me then they replace like for like, comet being their supplier so the amount will be based on current prices.

Good call on the Vat!

but like for like is the equiv model. You should be able to buy it today at the same price. If not tell them you want more £ or to buy from another retailer where £450 is enough?

If you search for your exact model of tv on a few different places, take note of the prices and show them all to your insurer to prove that you can't get the same tv for the money they are offering you.

I know that people do the same thing for car insurance, and insurance companies have been known to up their offer when they've been proved that they have under offered on the claim, so it might be worth trying with your contents insurer. You never know, but I'd say they would be more likely to up the offer if you could prove that it wasn't enough to replace your tv with the same model.
