Previously using a Sony Xperia X1 but dropped it so now buying a sim free phone...

Question 1: I have done some extensive searches and have found that the Omnia HD overall appears to be higher in specs than the Nokia N97. However, I had the HTC HD which was a pain in the bum to type on as there was not enough space ... Does anyone know if the texting is made easy on the omnia HD? It seems to be these small practical details that are left out of reviews etc! I am also interested in your views. Equally though, if you are looking for any info then please ask as Ive spent quite a while researching these two phones!

Question 2: I have seen plenty of both phones on ebay for around £400.00. However, I have had problems with phones off there in the past.

At the moment, the cheapest I have seen the Nokia N97 for is £499.99 from Nokia Shop with 15% quidco cashback.

As for the Omnia, the best I have found it for is the 16GB model for £489.99.

Does anyone have any better deals than this?! I do not want a contract as both phones work out more expensive doing this.

Thank you,
Ade

And Im sorry but I dont have a clue how to post photos!

My normal omnia runs on windows mobile and i hate it, stick with nokia's symbian software.

Edit: sorry this new one runs on the same type of software as the tocco which is better than the windows mobile but i'd still stick with nokia

i8910 is symbian, i'd go for that.

I also have the same dilemma :-( Think I'm gonna go with the i8910 though :)

After doing all that research I managed to get one on orange for £400,00 off power seller on ebay. Saves me £100.00 so am happy with that! Thanks for your help!

I decided to go for the Omnia. Femstar, if you want, I can update you when I get it to let you know how it goes? Im a bit of a mobile phone ***** and have used a hell of alot over the years so I like to think Im quite a good judge! :-)

No, the omnia runs on similar software as Nokias, not tocco.

Tough choice between omnia and N97. N97 looks nice and has a H/W keyboard, however it is serverly underpowered. Omnia is damn powerful, but lacks the H/W keyboard and it's very big - much bigger than it needs to be, if it was smaller but thicker then it would have been OK.

Defo Nokia, The Koreans wont match The Finns at this game lol

Although some people have complained about the N97 being underpowered, I've not seen it being an issue in practice and given it's faster than the the 5800 that's fine for me. I really miss having a keyboard on the 5800 which makes the N97 an easy choice for my use plus Nokia tend to focus on core features and less on gimmicky showoff features which as well as S60 being their interface I'd put my trust more in the N97. The 5800 has nothing flashy but the batterylife is good, the reception is excellent and there's generally very little wrong with the phone.

what im planning on doing now, is actually getting the Omnia HD, trying it out for a few days and if its as poor as I am sadly fearing it may be, I will replonk it back on ebay and get the nokia.

If the nokia would have been available straight away, I probably would have gone with that. However, as I am an impatient so n' so, I wanted a new phone ASAP and so ordered the omnia straight away.

Only time will tell!

neither phone is quite good enough for me.

I have an N95 8GB and a Nokia 5800. The N97 would be a nice upgrade from the N95 8GB and the OmniaHD would be a nice replacement for the 5800.

If only the processor on the N97 was 500mhz and it had a GPU aswell, the choice would be easy!

Ah, I had the N95 8 gig too! One of the best phones I had! Then I started having problems with it and it ended up in the repair centre longer than in my my hand. At the moment I am using yee olde faithful Nokia 2600. Every time one of these all singing, all dancing handsets goes wrong, I refer back to either this one or my Nokia 8850! The 8850 is 8 years old and has never let me down.!

Hi Phoenix2k, I have the same predicament as Mark and any light on your experience with the Omnia would be much appreciated. My current shortlist includes the iPhone 3Gs, Samsung Omnia HD, Nokia 97, HTC Diamond 2 / Touch Pro 2, albeit I am favouring the Omnia due to the OLED / HD / Symbian OS.
thx, Alicia

Omnia hd, get that and then flash it, its a good phone and it also looks good. I hate the Nokia touch system which is why i will always stick to the omnia hd, can be quite buggy at times, but i really liked the UI on the phone.

With regards to the likes of the Iphone 3gs, its just not that much difference over the 3g to justify the £150 price increase that has been whacked on over the current selling price of the 16gb 3g.

Get the Omnia HD imo.

HTC Touch Pro 2 - without a doubt.

With a free upgrade to windows mobile 6.5 and the fact they're bringing Sense UI to Windows Mobile, not to mention that the HTC Touch Pro 2 has almost identical base specs to the HTC Hero (so you'll see a port of the HTC Hero for it anyway).

I've got a HTC Touch Pro 2 - two of my friends have Nokia N97. One sold his after seeing my Touch Pro 2, the other wish's he got a Touch Pro 2 instead but can't afford to sell / put cash on top to get it. The N97 is nice, just feels and seems a little behind the pace when you play with it.

Not a big fan of samsung / nokia phones personally, much more third party development for HTC phones through XDA developers forum.. Or go Android and get the HTC Hero in a couple of weeks.

Symbian really seems to be lagging behind compared to Android, also WM will finally take the leap forward it needs with 6.5 and marketplace in september.
