Hi i have onoard sound on my motherboard and on most games you can hear a crackling/static sound and was wondering if this is common with onboard sound, would a sound card be better for me in the way of performance too?if so whats a good mid range sound card?thanks

Crackling/static sounds like a fault with the socket rather than something that's inherently wrong with onboard soundcards. What sort of pricerange do you have in mind for a dedicated soundcard?

I agree; it sounds like it's probably a problem with the connector. If you can hear some noise when you move the mouse around, that might be interference as well.

You can get sound cards pretty cheap these days. Decent ones are around £15-20.

How bad is it? I wouldn't expect more than faint noise from onboard sound these days.

I would try and see if you can identify the problem first since if it's not the hardware then a seperate sound card might be affected as well.

Does this happen with all noises in all programs? Is the level of cracking/static consistent or does it vary depending on what you're doing?

That can be a fairly common problem for onboard sound (if you have onboard dound issues that its). It eminates from a dodgy jack socket.
So your only options are to replace the jack or get a soundcard if you want to get rid of the crackle.

I Had exactly the same problem with the onboard on my old computer, i bought an external USB soundcard the Griffin iMic. Worked a treat. I dont actually use it any more so i am actually looking to sell it. £13 inc First class P+p.

Youll find that a lot of onboard sound cards crackling are down to conflicts with irq's etc if its only in games.

If you have a microphone hooked up try muting the microphone playback in the audio output properties.

Hit the nail on the HEAD!!!!

Make sure ALL microphones are muted!!!!! Then it should be fine.
