... Its not the name of a seedy channel five bluey featuring some minor celeb.

I'm off working in Malaysia for 2 weeks with a day stop over in Dubai, theres so much to do i can't fit it all in one day, so I need the advice from anyone who's been, planning on going or done more research than me.

What are the 'must do's" ?

Visit the Burj Al Arab for tea and cake .... book in advance though.

Go to the Gold Souk market.

Go skiing in the Mall of the Emirates.
#2
go to the water theme park

water park...... wild wadi is the original.... but atlantis is better IMHO....

bonus with wild wadi is you can go to the burj al arab later - its next door.... but as someone said, either book in advance for poncy muffin and tea, or be prepared to put down a minimum spend of £45 for drinks in the sky bar (i went for the later) which got me 3 cocktails..... ;)

i'd recommend buying a ticket for the observation deck at the burj khalifa, 124 floors up, 360 degree view of most of dubai, costs around £20 if booked in advance.
not sure if link allowed but here it is http://www.burjkhalifa.ae/language/en-us/observation-deck.aspx

the dancing fountains are just outside so you could do two things on the same day

I have free access to Wild Wadi I opted for this one becuase I designed it, plus staying in jumeirah beach, so I could get some pictures of the Burj Al Arab

You designed wild wadi?

are you sure, I work for the company who did design it :) My boss here designed Jumeriah Beach also

Really? funny that, the comapny that designed it no longer exists, they were bought out by MWH late last year.

hmmm, sadly not, Atkins designed it, at least did the initial schematic design, in fact my boss and very good friend was the guy who did it ;)

Atkins also designed the Burj al Arab....

Having worked for Atkins, twice, the later stint being as late as this Feb, I know of their full involvement on the project, unfortunatly they have a habbit of cocking things up... while they might have done the conceptual layout they fall over when it comes to real detail, hence a joint venture with a company specialising in water, water treatment and water lesuire: http://www.biwaterleisure.com/casestudies/detail.aspx?id=53

Your company loyalty is sweet though, do me a favour and find out how many hundreds of thousands they've overspent on their 3 latest failures in UAE.

I worked for Atkins and so did my wife! X)

Tell me about it, I only asked a priority of things to do, and I'm accused of never possibly being able to work for a company I've wored for, twice and their subcontracters that they do to do the real work.

Back on topic I found this: http://www.bigbustours.com/eng/dubai/custompage.aspx?id=dubai_sightseeing_tour&gclid=

So planning on bus hopping, pay the £45 for immediate entry to the Burj (tall one) the new 7D is comming with me so I'm planning on good pictures :)

..i didn't say you didn't work for anyone..... But for a FACT i know its not your design, you may have had hand in the detailed design, this i have no idea about.... to claim you designed it is lies and an attempt to steal someones glory...

sigh...

but i know the guy who did schematic design for it.... not sure why you're so defensive about the subject, i'm merely making conversation and didn't mean to offend, if i did, apologies.

enjoy your trip... if youre going to do the big bus tour, its a great idea and perfect way to jump around the city... if you wanna try something good, go to a bar and have a 'bullfrog' - total glory
#22
Apologies maybe I should have said I "re-designed" it, It was MY 3D model which highlighted fundamental flaws in the pretty crayon drawings, unfortunatly pretty crayon drawings never work, they win you the job and aid in gaining planning permission.

What you describe as glory, I describe as fixing a monumental **** up something thats become common in my dealings with your employer.

I get defensive because of the narrow minded company men who read all the success stories they see on Axis and believe that Atkins are soley responsible for a jobs success which has been 90% sub contracted out, when a job goes wrong its the fault of those small companies and they get the bad press.

*popcorn*

wow..... but seriously its been built how long, and only now you are going there? if it was MY design, then i'd of been there near opening, if not during opening... any hoots, enjoy your sketchup model, i'm sure its the bomb tracing other peoples ideas...... without these 'pretty crayon drawings' your input would never of been necessary.....

for the record, I don't really look on axis, don't need too, am heavily involved in the work that both myself and the company I work for undertake....

like you, I have had many opportunities to help tune other peoples creations, but would never ever claim them to be mine.... Its just wrong and whatever you like to think of both myself and the company I work for I will stand up for the things believe in...
