Well after 53 days of twiddling my fingers and biting my nails one of eggs has hatched ...I have another two in the same clutch so hopefully they will be hatching soon too !!
Any way they are Hermanni Tortoise and I thought they may hatch nearer to christmas and was going to call them Holly,Cracker and Tinsel....but now I'm having to re-think their names ....First one out I have called EVE as in New years eve...but I need two more new years Eve related names ..preferably femanine names or unisex....as they were incubated for Girls.Any help much appreciated on this one .......and then once this is done I can start thinking of names for the other 10 eggs still in my incubator !! lol

If I can put in a sensible reply - congratulations from another tortoise owner!!

We have three tortoises, and I cannot bear to try to hatch their eggs in case we cannot raise the hatchlings and they die.

Good luck with your babies! :)

why do people do that when it's cold outside anyway?

Yes I am aexpecting more to hatch.....So your son wants one does he...how much background information have you done on them.....its important to know what you are doing with reptiles before you take one on.
Its not as easy as tomato and iceberg letuce...there is alot of expens in having them.......not enough people realise this before they take them on unfortunatly.

Because the temps flutuate far too much in this country for them to hibernate safely.
Hermanns for example need a constant temp of 5-6 degrees during hibernation for around 12 weeks..........you can't do that outside in this country as many times the temps drop to freezing and below at night, and on a warm spring day you can sometimes get into double figures too !!.
Thats why so many tortoises died when they were all the rage 20-30 years ago because too little was known about them and they were all neglected through lack of knowledge......Ask around i bet you know someone that says they had a tortoise when they were a kid......but were is it now?...thats right DEAD !!
and the average life expectancy of a tortoise should be about 120 years !!!......so thats one hell of a tragedy for alot of tortoise being kept incorrectly .

Baby Torts are just like adults ...they hatch like little tanks..and their needs are nearly the same as the adults ....not too much different.

my husband had one as a child - it belonged to the family for donkeys years - in those days tortoise were kept in the garden and then hibernated in the garden shed inside a box with some shredded newspaper. Just to buy a baby tortoise is £ 175 not including all the other items you need so definitely not something that is a fly by night whim
