Christmas cards will only arrive on time if they are sent in the next THREE weeks, warn striking postal workers

By Daily Mail Reporter

Christmas cards and gifts may not arrive in time if they are not sent within the next three weeks, postal workers have warned.

The Communication Workers Union said Royal Mail had to resolve industrial action that has crippled the network if the Christmas post was to get through.

Tens of millions of letters and parcels have built up in strikes, with pictures of 'mail mountains' at a distribution centre in Dartford, Kent.

Union leaders say a million letters may never be delivered. Martin Walsh, the CWU’s London representative, said: 'Unless we get an agreement by the second or third week of October, the backlog is so big it will impact upon Christmas.

'Royal Mail has drafted in managers, but all they’re trying to do is to clear mail that has been posted recently.'

Postal workers have staged regional strikes for months in a dispute over jobs, pay and services. The CWU is balloting 121,000 workers for a national strike before Christmas.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: 'We are focused on delivering excellent service over the vital run-up to Christmas.'
