Opportunity to Cancel Your 3 Mobile Contract! 3 Like Home is Ending

Apologies if this is a repost:

I got a text today from 3 Mobile stating that the "3 like home" service is being scrapped on the 30th of June. For those who don't know, 3 like home is the service that allows you to use your inclusive minutes/text/data overseas as long as you're connected to a 3 network.
In this text, there's a (free) web link, clicking on it reveals at the bottom:

" Finally because of the 3 Like Home change, it's only fair that we point out your right to end your contract with us, without paying an early cancellation fee. However we very much hope it won't come to that because we still believe we offer great value rates and great coverage. "

Unfortunately for 3, it did come to that. I phoned up 3 (333 on your mobile) and after about 30 mins of refusing £5 account credits, they sent my PAC through.

Reports from MSE say that this may not be possible if you haven't used your phone abroad on a 3 network within the last 12 months.

More info in this thread:

More info on (the late) 3 like home:
http://www.three.co.uk/Help_Support/International/3_Like_Home_Pay_Monthly

So i've ended my shocking contract with shocking signal anywhere 8 months early and I get to keep my (lovely) HTC TYTN II

Good Luck!

I didn't get that text from them. Does it means the offer to cancel is only valid to customers susbcribing to the "Like Home" service?
#2
It's possible, but a bit cheeky seeing as you could say "but I was off to hong kong tomorrow!".

EDIT: The "3 like home" service is included in every 3 mobile contract so you're automatically subscribed to it.

Some discussion about this on the MSE thread:

The forum link seems like it doesn't work, however if it does, I have just upgraded to a Nokia E71 - keeping that and paying nothing would be NICE :)

Any experience would be useful?!

Not sure where Majoringram saw that statement as I've gone all through the web link they sent and it does not mention anything at all about canceling your contract early.

I doubt it's that selective that only a mere handful see the cancellation part on the website
#5
^^^^ MSE link above works fine for me?

If you've just upgraded you may be out of luck, apparently this only applies to people who have taken out or upgraded contracts before april 09.

I got Mix and Match March 2008 18month contract, no text here for 3 like home or any notification of any sort (which as I understand it is mandatory if changing contract, even if it is allowed under their rules, or am i wrong)

Anyone on similarly timed deal like me get a text?
#9
There are two texts being sent out - one link informs you the right to cancel, one doesnt.
Unfortunately I was in Spain when I got mine and deleted it without thinking or checking - now havn't got a clue which I got.
It seems though, that if you have ever used another 3 network whilst abroad you are eligible to cancel, and if you never have, then (like me) you are stuck with their shoddy service

Brilliant news mate :) this is like music to my ears, :) ringing up to cancel now!

they are being arsey with me on the phone, but im being firm and told them i want to cancel!

I had 10 months left of an eighteen month contract and was allowed to end my contract early. I just said I have family in Australia and the change means that calls will cost me more if I go there and they accepted that. I did get put on hold several times but I got out of my contract with no extra charges, just the 30 days line rental.
#12
just out of interest mate, when you canceled did they say you still have to give 30 days notice?

thats what they are telling me.

they offered me £20 good will gesture but thats pennys for such a shocking ignorant service.
#13
ah you got the 30 days line rental malarky too.

im guessing if we dont use the phone during those 30 days they cant bill us ?

Good line, lets hope it works for others!

They said I had to give 30 days notice. They said I get charged up until the latest out of 18th June or the date my PAC code gets applied to a new phone.

To be fair the change to the terms doesn't come into affect until the 30th June... not that I really want to stick up for a company like 3....

Salute..Major Ingram!

lol

Many Thanks for posting this! I've seriously been soooo annoyed with this company and this might be the answer to the problem!

I have not used this before to be honest, I didn't know about it! Is pretty useful....Is there a specific country in which there is coverage...I was thinking to say India/HK....as I may be visiting them soon?

The text from 3 specified the countries involved. I noticed Australia and Ireland because they could affect me but there were others.

I took an 18 month mix & match contract on an HTC TyTN2 as well. Never got the text, or perhaps I deleted it?? I've never used the phone overseas.

Will give it a try but not sure if I can cancel.

I've no knowledge of these things, so what can I do with with my phone if I successfully cancel anyway? Won't I need a new contract anyway??
#19
I use the 3 Mobile Broadband, as I work on a ship between UK and Republic of Ireland this significantly affects my internet usage. I have tried to speak to customers services but the exceptional employees don't want to discuss it and just talked about new "great rates"; I pointed out that the "great rates" can not be any better than the free rates currently on offer and they hung up!

You can unlock your TYTN II fairly easily. When you cancel you'll be issues a PAC number which you give to your new mobile provider (if you want one). This will enable your old number to be transferred to a new network.

If you don't use your PAC within 30 days of recieving it, 3 will continue to bill you so either find a new network within 30 days or phone 3 and tell them to cancel regardless of PAC status.

GOD been on the phone for an hour!!! they are mad, they do everything to make you happy when you want to leave, but dont give a damn when you are tied in.
[admin]#24
#25
they are denying that I can leave here - telling me no txt messages have been sent out when I've got 3 of them!
#26
now they are telling me I didn't receive the text message again! I hav 3 contracts and have received them on all of them!!!
#27
The thread over at moneysavingexpert is the one to read if you need a comprehensive overview of what's been happening with this. The legal arguments are also clearly laid out and might help some of you fight your case. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...html?t=1684553

oh, and just read that Bitter Wallet piece - much quicker way of getting a summary of the above :)

This is perhaps because they are referring to the message offering you the right to cancel? I presume, like me, you received the other message - the one giving info only but not offering free early cancellation?
#29
They're saying they haven't sent me any message etc....Fools....Now they will call me back....Well that's what they say! ;-)

You can unlock your TYTN II fairly easily.

Thanks

If unlocked, does that simply mean you can use it on any network, and more cheaply or something?
#31
The thing is all 3 users are affected by such changes in their contract....It's something we pay for (it is included in our contract) so whenever we are abroad we can use it, regardless if we have used it before or not!
So not notifying all 3 customers is quite unprofessional really....If this didn't come to our attention and we use our phone abroad in the future whose liable for the extra bills?
#32
I'm being called back on the next 24 hours from a manager.
#33
Hi people

Just to update...ended up talking to 3 people and then the manager....They told me they cannot cancel my contract, if I did I would have to pay the remaining months!

They seriously are a bunch of fools, horrible customer service.

Am off to email papers now :whistling:

My contract was coming up for renewal in a few months but I decided this was as good a time as any to cancel early without penalty.

After an hour or so, probably more and after hearing lots of retention offers they finally caved. My SIM will revert to PAYG in a months time. Result.

how the hell did you get them to do it. they called me a liar on the phone!
#37
they offered me 20 quid off my bill as a goodwill gesture
i said i would only stay if they brought forward my upgrade date they agreed i chose a phone then they called back to say i wasn't eligible for an upgrade for another 6 weeks
i could give them 30 days notice to cancel but the phone i want to upgrade to is cheapest on Three
might as well take my 20 quid and wait 6 weeks
#38
What number do i have to ring?
#39
ring customewr services on 333

Hey Bassman_uk

I might call again today as to send a letter is going to be the last resort. I think it depends who you end up talking to on the phone....some people will accept and other will just ignore whatever you say!

I really was fed up yesterday! Put me on hold for 25 minutes and then told me I did not get a text! Then I asked if I didn't get the text and ended up calling from Australia, who would pay the bills? They didn't even offer any discount etc

How's it going for you? Have you called again?
