I want to go on broadband for the first time, We have a home computer and a laptop to go on the internet, What is the best way to go about it? Orange have offered me up to 8 m speed (currently our speed is only 1.5 though) and 10gb usage a month with a free wireless router for £8 a month as we have had a contract for about 8 years, They cant give us the free one as we are not in the area! Does anyone know of any deal better than this that we can use to support the computer and laptop?
Thankyou in advance

I would say stay clear of Orange broadband-the worst provider i know.Personaly,i am using Tiscali (no better providers in my area) for £14.99 a month i have broadband, line rental and free weekend calls. In 2 years i have no problems with them whatsoever ; speed is always good(line speed supported-4.9 Mbs) and price is nice too.

im on orange broadband and i wouldnt recommend it, sky is a very good offer if you have sky. i wouldnt recommend talk talk either as ive heard some shocking stories. but id deffo pay a bit extra to get a better service. cheap is not always best. but deffo the sky option is good if you have it

im with orange. have been for over 2 and a half years. Up to 8mb, i regularly get between 6-7mb speed, £12.99 a month unlimited. Never had any problems at all whatsoever. i always reccomend then to friends and family, as they are on either tiscali, aol or talktalk and they always complain of something or another. None of them get my speeds or pay as little as i do.

What about this, Is tiscali any good they have a special offer and £40 quidco for
Tiscali TV Variety pack, with over 70 of the best digital channels
Up to 8Mb Broadband with unlimited downloads
Free wireless router
Free Tiscali+ digital recorder
Free phone line rental (keep your existing phone number)
Free calls - simply choose between Weekend 19.99 or Anytime 24.99 calls

For this would I only need bt line rental? so in the long run it would work out much better with a tv package and free digital recorder included?

Does the speed depend on where you live though, Ours is only 1.5 mb. Does this mean it is pointless us getting broadband?:?

ADSL (i.e. everyone except virgin cable) speed depends on how far away from your phone exchange you are.

1.5Mbps IS broadband already, dial up (which came before broadband) is 0.05Mb.

This is rather misleading if you don't know what you're looking at, basically if 'BT Wholesale ADSL Max' is the standard broadband, if that's ticked you can sign up to virtually every ISP out there. The other ones are ISPs that run their own networks, but this can have a varying effect. Some, like O2, TalkTalk and Virgin cable will charge you much more or refuse to connect you if you're not listed there while with others it makes absolutely no difference as to whether it's ticked or not, like AOL and Tiscali.

I have used Orange for years, in fact I was with Freeserve which changed to Wanadoo which changed to Orange!! All in all I am very satisfied with them, don't get anywhere near 6-7mb nearer to 2.5-3mb, I have the free broadband included with my mobile phone contract, they changed me to this even though I was currently with them and paying £22.99/month! They also dropped the price of my phone contract half way through from £25/month to £20/month as I was not using all my included mins etc, then gave me a free phone upgrade still at £20/month and still with free broadband.:-D

My Mum had Pipex Homecall broadband which was ok then changed to Talk Talk which she really regrets as it is very slow, she should get similar speed to you at 1.5mb but rarely does!:x

If you only get 1.5meg with your currect supplier that isn't likely to change much as the same cables are used to deliver all ADSL services from exchange to router. You may see a differnce in speed with some providers with an ADSL2+ backbone (sky/easynet 02/be) the fact that your not in a free laptop area would suggest that the Orange broadband on offer is BT wholesale broadband rebranded as Orange. As some one said use the samknows website and that will give you a good list of providers available to you in your area.

yes. the further away you are from your exchange, the slower your speed. Also the amount of connections can also slow your speed down.

1.5 is fine. Whether it cuts out or not is up to them. Maybe if you live miles from anywhere but if you get a speed of 1.5 then it should be fine.

had great fun with tiscali , had enough of not having any connection so phoned to cancel , id spend 3 hrs on the phone the day before and had enough , they sent the MAC code happly enough and i moved to BT . tiscali then took out a payment after sending me a letter saying the activation of the MAC code was to cancel with them so i then cancelled the direct debt ,,,,,, skip forward a few months and i had debt collecters phoneing me up asking for payment , i then pointed out i cancelled after tiscali STOLE money from my account and i asked for full details which i retained to go toward the proposed court case in which i intended to take tiscali to court and rape um , the incompitence from tiscali is beyond belief , i could write a thousand words about the ignorence and incompitence but it would bore ,,, so all i will say is tiscali is cheap for a very good reason

oh and speed , further away from the exchange then the slower you get , mines miles away , my speed ? almost none
