Ordering from Amazon US and ticking the 'Gift' option.

I was just looking at something on Amazon US which would be well over the £18 customs limit, and realised that if you specify that it's a gift, they won't print the price on the "packing slip" even if the don't wrap it for you. So...has anyone tried this to get around UK customs knowing the value of the item? If it's not printed anywhere, how are they going to know?

Just wondering if it's a viable method to avoid that dreaded charge! :)

2.4 Gifts

Goods sent as a gift are not free of import duties and import VAT. However, customs duty will not be collected if the amount is less than £7, and import VAT is not chargeable if:

* the value of the gift does not exceed £36
* the customs declaration is completed correctly
* the gift has been sent from a private person outside the EU to a private person(s) in this country
* the gift is for the use of either yourself or your family
* there is no commercial or trade element and the gift has not been paid for either directly or indirectly
* the gift is of an occasional nature only eg for a birthday or anniversary.

Please note the purchase of goods from outside the EU to give as a gift to a relative or friend, whether or not addressed to that person, is treated as a ‘commercial consignment’ for which the import VAT relief threshold is £18

I think you also might be getting mixed up with packing slip and customer sticker.

I've got a feeling this refers to the "invoice" they put in with the item. It's so the person you are sending it to as a gift doesn't know how much you paid for it.

Uk site does the same.

I might be wrong though :)

Well that's what I wondered - but you can have the item sent as a gift direct to the recipient, so what's the point of not printing it on the invoice if it's still going to be on the front of the package?

Because what you are quoting is for US mail ?? where they wouldn't use a customs sticker ??

bristol, I've just checked for you and Amazon.com will still put the value on customs slips even if marked as a gift. Here's the quote and the link for you. Sorry I know it's not good news.

If the order is a gift, the package is marked "Gift," but the cost of the item is still stated on the customs form.
Customs authorities require us to state the value of the gift item directly on the package
