Owed some money. What would you do?

Big Rick Avatar

An old aquaintance owes me £50 for use of my broadband but then moved and now refuses to even get in contact. The deadline I have given via text up on the 17th.

I have made enquires and found someone who is willing to 'buy the debt' off me.

Would you go ahead?

how much are they willing to 'buy' the debt off you?
#2
man up and collect yourself, selling the debt is wussing out.
#3
No I wouldnt - not for £50 anyway. Not nice whats happened to you but I would just put it down to experience and never a lender nor a borrower be...............always brings trouble
#4
For £50 is it worth the hassle, chalk it up to experience and move on.

guys i know pay 40% for personal debts but won't touch less than £1k and add interest to the debtor.
#7
"Buying" debt, so ur paying somebody else's debt ?????????????????????????????

How can they "buy" the debt of you etc. I'd be very, very careful unless you can prove the debt and have a contract etc, the debt is unenforcable no matter what this person tells you.

Laws surrounding debt are very strict and it sounds dubious that someone is willing to buy such a debt, do bare in mind as the original creditor if they start persuing illegal debt collection activites, YOU as the original creditor will be held responsible.

Trust me you can get people who buy personal/private debts, the "laws" surrounding debt dont even come into play, but we are talking bigger debts than a nights beer money.
#9
I can't see anyone buying this debt as it has no standing in the eyes of a court. Other than smashing their face in, which should get a nice prison visit, whoever buys it will simply be toasting their money as the other person will simply tell them to naff off.

Not quite, say you had someone owing you £1000, I would pay you £400 for the debt then they would owe it to me, I would then go to enforce this debt and add weekly interest on top.

In this case yes, for worthwhile amounts people will buy them, the ones I know are the type people are terrified of, grass one up and its your family who pay the price.
#12
I assume the people you know enforce mostly gambling/drug debts.

Not really likely they will be too interested in broadband owings
#13
The amount the guy willing to pay for debt is not relevant and I don't want to write it off either because the person involved has been a total 'Bar Steward' about it.
So I do think it's worth the hassle..

BTW, my name is Big Rick because I used to weigh 24½ stone.

Don't be so bloody rediculous, the "laws" that come into debt are there for a reason, who are you a relative of the Kray twins?

Op can't legally inforce this debt, unless he has a contract, etc, unless of course he is a wanna be gangsta too, so in that case I'd suggest he stops watching EE.

You must have lived a sheltered life, do you think everyone respects and obeys the law? The prisons hold getting on for 90,000 law abiding citizens who are all innocent?

Thats what I said above they wouldnt touch this amount, some a lot are they type you described and also under the counter business deals, mostly people themselves on the edges of legality.

Rick I have been burned by supposed mates enough times for money way higher than £50. Just let it go, hardly even worth thinking about.

If you actually saw him as a mate to start with what are you charging him to use your internet for in the first place.

In the original post it read 'an old aquaintance' not 'a mate'.
It was a neighbor who went over my broadband allowance and that was the amount I was charged by my ISP.

do you and this aquaintance have a contract in writing regarding this debt? If you dont, then legally the debt doesnt actually exist. If you do,then small claims court. I must admit,Im utterly astonished anyone would offer to "buy" a debt of 50 quid tho.

By your posts in here op I am not entirely surprised he doesnt want to get in contact.

You do know you broke your contract with your supplier by letting a neighbour use your single dwelling broadband connection?

I gathered, so it's a thread for wannabe gangstas to boast about their conenctions on the net......how 90s.

What is he wanting people to say, yeah pay some one to kick his head in?

No boasting sweet cheeks, just stating how life is and things can and do operate, contrary to some peoples naivety.

cant believe anyone would buy a debt of £50.
my brother in law has owed us £500 for the past 2 years we lent it him coz his car wouldnt be released from a garage and he needed the car and to put a long story short he has done a s***er on us and not been in contact.i wouldnt sell the debt just put it down to bad experience.
i know people who do buy debts usually £1000 or more they would give you the £1000 and immediately put there bill up to £3000.
these people are not nice and will break every bone in your body if not paid.
let it go put it down to a bad experience if i can do it on £500 i am sure you can with it being only £50.

WOW!

And there was me actually believing all your past comments about now going straight after your life of crime! Seems a leopard cant change its spots.

Demanding money with menaces is pretty low down there imo

Quite appalled tbh

There is either Gangsters or no Gangsters, so you are just talking about someone who wants "revenge" over a debt, nothing to do with being a criminal or a bad person, revenge is natural.

To be honest with this OP, it's £50, it's **** all money, go to their house and ask for it, if they say no, just do something to his house / flat etc, then leave it.

I know where he moved to.

I am not a so called called wanna gangster. I simply want my money back that I cannot afford to lose. If had bothered to get get in contact to say that he couldn't afford it, I might not have dug my heels in so much.
