Packaging, polution, waste - Environmental impact of requesting freebies?

Do people ever think of the environmental impact of requesting freebies?

I got the Red Nose Day walkers ears, didnt make a donation, and they are sat in my house of no use to me or anybody.

Surely we need to start looking at requesting free stuff, and wondering what is the point? Packaging, polution, waste.

Thoughts?

 I saw they were giving them away and thought to myself 'what the hell would I do with those?' and didn't get any. That's my good deed for the environment today

This is clearly bothering you. You asked the same question in another thread
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57263&highlight=baby
and my reply is the same too

"Why so you need to ask peoples thoughts on this? Clearly you order stuff you don't want or need. That is your enviromental problem you have to live with.

The majority of people here just order what they want or they think a charity might use to raise money. I cannot imagine there are many sad people here who just order every single freebie just for the hell of it

I would suggest think less about the environment and more about your own morals. Why on earth would you order comic relief stuff and not make a donation. Or even get oinvolved in some event where they might have been useful to raise more money"

 I got to agree with jonny and for the same reasons. I ordered some samples of baby moisturiser to try. It came in all its packaging and I opened and used the miniscule smear of cream on babies face and learnt very little regarding the product. What can you tell from one application? I could have bought a squillion applications for a couple of pounds. I think everyone likes getting something for nothing. But when you think about it ... it is not really for nothing. Anyway after I had used the miniscule smear. After I binned the leaflet (Not even money off vouchers in it!!) ... the envelope and the huge amount of packaging. I then promised myself to think a little harder in future ... to kurb my desire to get something for nothing.

He is only asking do we think about the full consequences of our actions. I don't think he is having a go at anyone so perhaps nobody should have a go at him?

Jonny ease your conscience and walk into a charity shop today, hand over the offensive ears and make a donnation as well :).

Its true I acted without thinking. This post wasnt about replys, it was about making people think.

If you can honestly tell me you havent taken a freebie because its free, rather than because you needed it, then this post isnt meant for you.

ilgimpse I suggest you go back and read some of your posts

I admit I don't give it a second thought, I am sometimes amazed at the amount of packaging that for instance Amazon use for just wrapping a book.
#8
Can't care less.

You asked for thoughts, that means people are free to reply (replies).

If you want to see my postings, just click on my name - it lists them for you, much easier for you.

I am very comfortable with my carbon footprint thanks.

I only order stuff that I (Or close family members) will make use of, and recycle all the packaging it is sent in.

As already mentioned, I took walkears to charity shop before red nose day, and then got given some by someone else and they have ended up in a dressing up box.

I do understand your point though, there are some people who send off for anything that is free, but if they want to waste their time doing that then I am not really bothered - as long as I am not

Can't care less.

About the environment in general? About your impact on the environment?

I recycle the packaging but recycling does not neutralise the energy spent.

I don't care about my impact on the environment at all. I do recycle but only when it is convenient for me. I eat what I want, I wear what I want and I drive what I want (it is Prius, BTW :)).
As to carbon footprint - welcome to Al Gore® GlobalWarming™ world of money making.

There is only one way to be fully carbon (and other stuff too) neutral. But I don't think any of Greenpeace activists would follow this route. If they did life would be sooo much better :)
#14
If you don't care at all about your impact on the environment why do you recycle at all? I assume if you don't care about your impact on the environment then you don't care about the environment in general?
#15
I recycle only because that's how our council want to collect household waste. If not that, I wouldn't bother to recycle, full stop.

When I lived in Germany, I had about 8 separate recycling containers and once you got the hang of it, recycling was easy.
Then I moved to Norfolk and all they used was Black Bin Bags. What a waste, but if Councils can't be bothered, then why should I?
#17
i think we get it your posting the same thing over over again pac it in its annoyin go join greenpeace
#18
I order the packaging for free and pay the council a fortune in rates to dispose of it, my conscience is clear.
#19
in response to dinosteveus.

Well.. my council provides each household with 4 different bins:
1. Green wheeled bin - garden waste
2. Brown wheeled bin - non-recyclable waste (pretty much everything)
3. Grey bin - paper
4. Blue bin - plastic bottles.

This way they make recycling easier (jn theory) but in several cases I noticed that waste collectors simply put everything in one truck, not bothering to separate. Why should I care about recycling then?

NO disrespect intended, but will you please use a few Full Stops and Commas. Your posts are very hard to read. Who was that post directed at?

Dinostevus maybe in germany your ebay fanatic streak was born? ;-)
Definitely an eco-saving thing ... even if it does not seem it.

Kommunist do you dump rubbish out your car window? Sorry I don't fully understand how someone can't care about the environment at all?

No I don't :) You got me on this one. :)
But I don't do this because throwing rubbish out ot car window (that's including cigarette ends) will make surroundings unsightly and I think this is kind of antisocial behavior. You can, of course, say something like "aha! so if you care about 'unsightly surroundings' then you do care about environment!" and you probably be right. I should have use different wording probably.

What I don't care is some people's obsession with environmentalism. I fine if they keep it to themselves, religiously recycling everything and calculating how much pollution trip to nearest farm (shopping at supermarket is a big no-no, I know :)) would produce (either directly or indirectly). I hate when people are trying to impose their views on others and immediately claim abuse if others disagree.

Well all have a part to play in re cycling , most councils provide us with several bins plus paper collections, I think its a very real problem, land fill in the country is getting towards capacity, so whats the options... like some not bother( head in sand ?) ..its someone elses problem? or try to do a bit, I know what I would rather do.

just off to the tip with me cardboard :-D

Ebay had just started when I lived in Germany. ;-)
As for my "ebay fanatic streak", My ebay sales pay the bills and I can mostly work from home and at my own pace.

Chinese would happily accept all our waste then make their products out of it and ship it back. Not that it makes a difference :)
But that's totally different story...

Hope I have not come across as a militant extremist;-). I do care but I am not fanatical. I do like to challenge people's views ... not in condeming way, more I think it is good to double think. I love nature and wildlife. I therefore try to do the little I can to help conserve this wonderful world we live in. Now you make me sound like a hippy

Dino at some point when we both have time I need to learn about ebay from you. I have a pile of junk:p.

There are bits across the thread that i can equate with... I agree with dinosteveus because when we lived in Germany and The Netherlands recycling is made really easy, (that and the fact that if you don't put domestic refuse in the correct bin you are heavily fined:whistling: ) but since we have come back, i can see why people are so lax about it it over here. I asked at the council what was recyclable, and from the pathetic list she gave me, it is almost as if the councils attitude is that they can't be bothered - hardly setting a good example. However, i think the bottom line is that you can't keep bashing people over the head with a verbal stick - you have to let people let their consciences decide:)
#28
At our local council tip we have three Elvis's ... no matter what you go with they tell you to dump it in the back of their landfill truck. I have tried to say I wanted to recycle and it not go down well .

Nah, I wouldn't call you an extremist :)
Environmentally aware, yes, but not to a miltant extreme ;)
As to council tip - that proves my point exactly. Our local tip workers don't give a dang about recycling. Whatever you bring to tip - all goes to the same place. And if council really want to do something for environment, then would stop sending those endless pamphlets describing how great and green council is and sort this local tip mess first. Not even to mention that something like 100% of those pamphlets are going straight to bin, thus increasing waste even more.

No I don't because I don't know how they are going to send it to me and I have no direct influence on how they send it to me.

I do recycle and no I don't order things that I cannot do anything with, if I did I would regard myself as being selfish when some offers are limited.

It's a shame the council don't recycle more.

Have some of you got a chip on your sholder? All Jonny did was ask an opinion and the poor guy gets shot down, I'm a new user of the site and it makes me think twice about posting if you are going to get slammed.

He has not been shot down,he asked for opinions and some gave theirs and questioned his motives(or asked him to question his own).

I am sure Jonny can take it on the chin..........nothing to be scared of here, everyone is usually very friendly though differences of opinion are given,if it is done in the right way,no harm done.:)

Please continue to post, hopefully you will find a lovely, helpful bunch of folk like I and many others have done.

Welcome to the forum btw:)

He did ask for our thoughts, maybe it came across like a shoot out but what I saw red over was why he ordered a set of 'ears' when he clearly had no need for them and then they sat there when they were on a limited offer basis and therefore he might have stopped someone from getting a pair that they would of made use of. And all the resources used to get them to him because he requested them and then he 'complains' about the waste of packaging etc, surely this was a self shooting in the foot.

If anyone has a problem with excess packaging they can always return it to the place of purchase for the supplier to dispose of it, correctly and in an environmental way. The WEEE directive is very informative about the electrical side of the recycle process, and there is one to do with packaging as well.

BTW welcome along and don't get to upset about posts in this section it is mainly for letting steam off and sometimes it does appear that way, you sometimes have to rise above it :whistling:
