My sons mate used spraypaint on his guitar, I'm sure he used a primer first. He uploaded his video to YouTube so mabye have a look there for some tips.
Using this primer : (EBAY item 290519171183)
Plasti-Kote Satin Super Spray Paint Sumptuous Purple 400ml (url in op)

would i be able to achieve a finish similar to this :
I would think primer (so that the colour paint adheres to the guitar), paint & clear coat. You may need multiple layers of paint & clear coat depending on how you want the guitar to appear.

There are a load of results when you type "How to paint a guitar" into google.
Can you think of a better place to ask OP? combined we are very clever here... :)

I had my guitar painted by rover while I was on work experirence many years ago
He did a wicked job in the spray booth & the colour was carrabic blue
