Parental controls...do I have to have an account on the machine start up bit

Hi
Bought my son a netbook Samsung N220 for his 14th birthday.
I also have this machine.
On mine when i start up there is just my name that i touch and then enter my password.
I really wanted it only to be him on his machine, however i do want to put some parental properties on. (yes i know some may think i am spoiling his fun but there's a lot on the web a 14 year old shouldn't be seeing and he will have this in his bedroom. Up till now everything has been done downstairs within my sight.)
Am i right in thinking i will have to be listed as the main user i think they call it the administrator and then create his account. I was hoping it would just be him on the screen but that we could put parental controls on that within his account.
Basically it would just be nice for him if i didnt show up on the start up page or whatever it is called.
Please don't misunderstand me he is a good kid and I trust him but when it comes to the sex stuff he is 14. I dread the sleaze he could find on the net but i also realise he will be very inquisitive which is perfectly normal. In my days you had to sneak a look at the book called the joy of sex in the local library.
Thanks i would really appreciate sensible answers please.

for parental controls you do

edit: oh I see what you mean...in XP you could do this by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL on startup and it would give you the option of logging in as the administrator, but wasn't visible on the start screen. Not looked into it for Windows 7 / Vista.

In all seriousness, a bit of porn won't kill him. We've all done it, that's how you learn when growing up :p

If he's clued up, he'll get around the parental controls anyway ;)

Open DNS is very good and FREE - go to http://www.opendns.com and have a read.
Basically you set up an account and then all the traffic goes through their server. On your own login panel you can use default settings for how strict you want the surfing to be. You can block individual websites or groups of known categories. Have a look but dont be put off it is really simple, they just explain it in a more complex way

A quick search tells me it has a restore partition that will get rid of anything he tries to put on it or any settings he changes.

Couple of years ago when my son was 9 he had friends in his room - playing xbox, or so I thought. He shouted down to me "mum" I said "what" he said "oh its okay, doesnt matter"................then I heard lots of giggling and decided to creep upstairs. They were all roaring with laughter then I grabbed some laundry quickly chapped and walked in and they all jumped up - I then loooked on tv screen which was now just showing the main Sky menu..............I pressed backup and lo and behold there was a channel called Babe Station on and 3 scantily dressed woman on a bed begging viewers to call in for some "private chat".

I was livid - and one of his friends ran like mad downstairs and out the front door - then the others blamed him X) I called the boys house as was just mortified and his dad said "Uch well, when I was his age all I had to look at was the underwear section in the catalogue" X)

From that day he has parental control on his sky all password protected lol

Yes but I dont think he would as he knows how much trouble he would be in. I know i am being old fashioned but he is aware that I would take the netbook away or make him use it downstairs. I appreciate in another year of so he probably wont care about that either this is more a short term worry.

I know but i do think i have to try. By the way i would disagree with you on everyone has, I never have, i just think especially at this age things should go a bit slower than suddenly going into porn but i know i must sound an old fuddy duddy. At least this way i hope he will know its something we dont agree with. In a few years when he's at Uni he can watch to his hearts content. LOL

Bossyboots that's hilarious. Its just the sort of thing I would expect of kids...we,ve all been there. I do think i have been too lax up till now and feel i have to do something. Luckily at the mo we have no tv's upstairs which is why i am now in a panic.
At least you know what sort of things the kids dad watches....

Hi dragonchris, i think thats the point. whether kids see this stuff or not I think half the point of parents is to show that we disapprove of it so that at least they think its a bit naughty.
Trouble is he has probably been going round to a friends house for years and seeing stuff. lol

Thanks guys for your help informative and funny.
For you who aren't parents yet, your time will come.......
Thank god I dont have girls that would be even worse i think.

Lumoruk I dont think he would know how to switch the tv over to freeview anyway! So many cables coming off his tv for his sky, xbox, Wii that he just wouldnt have a clue. Anyway, he is now 11 and totally HATES GIRLS!!! So the thought of seeing them naked just now would make him sick X) (yeah i know this will change in time!!)

Goofey - your being a good parent here - and things are so different to when we were young i.e technology so we have to keep an eye out on what they are up to.

Bossyboots, you're forgetting one important factor he's male :{

and therefore a lot smarter than you.

near enough every page you click on has some porn clicks, daughter had her laptop at 15 and has never had parental controls on it, she knows more about comps than me so would have been pretty pointless
