I passed my driving test today first time, but really annoyed and depressed that I got quoted £1,000+ as a named driver on my dads policy.

#3
Congratulations, hope my partner passes 1st time,he started his lessons this week.
#4
Yey, well done :-D Insurance is sooo bad for young drivers!

Yeh, I am gonna have to carry on getting the train. The thing is now though I cannot even go places on my own and stuff like that, I'll have to cart my dad out or get the bus. I don't understand how an insurance company can quote £450 with a provisional licence then once I have passed bump it up to £1400 with a full driving licence. It makes no sense.

makes my blood boil. The teenagers in the US of A all drive mustangs, evos, even 350z's and here in the UK we carnt even get cheap insurance for a ****** nova

Congratulations!!! :-D

How many minors then and what for?

www.lv.com should be a bit more reasonable than that for named driver

Congrats

I passed first time as well, in July.
Just got a new car today, had my first shot of it :-D
Im getting my insurance for £930 in my own name, with both parents as named drivers though.
Depends on your age as well i think, i'm just turning 23 next week.

Shop about though, and trawl the online sites.
Moneysupermarket and Confused are good, as i got mine at the first one.

Congratulations......I passed first time too...the driving examiner git just sat there for 10 minutes writing stuff down before he told me i'd passed!...I ended up asking him if I'd passed or not and he replied..."Oh yeh you did"..That was it!

If you're going to buy car insurance at a high rate why not go through quidco then and get some cashback too :)

I would say try elephant.co.uk, they were the best for us.

I would say put your Dad on the quote as main driver, but I am assuming he is already insured so don't know how it would work.

Well I had 11 minors, all for different things. The two manouveres I got was 1. Turn in the road and 2. reverse round a corner. Aced them both and aced emergency stop!

Regarding the insurance, my dad has been on to the AA, with whom his policy was, and they quoted £2800 quid for me as named driver. So my dad said that can't be. He then asked why and she said that the Car is insurance group 23. We researched the insurance group of the car and we found it as an 8 so we phoned back and she said that they group theirs differently and as a result it is a 23. After that my dad said he will change to we went on money supermarket and the cheapest there was £2553 with me as a named driver on his policy. Then confused was £2600 and the cheapest tesco quote we got was £2720.

His car is a VW Bora 2.0 sport (manual) so it isnt like it is a quick car. The sport is only sporty seats, sports suspension and a sport 3-spoke steering wheel. I have driven it at night when I was learning and it was quicker than the 1.6 I learned in. Just a shame how insurance companies work over here and the law regarding the insurance. In Italy, the car is insured not the driver so more or less anyone can drive any car (don't hold me to this but this is what my uncle told me).

I assume they work on the basis that as a provisional driver, you are always accompanied by a full licence holder. Once you have passed your test you are considered to be competant to be in control of the car unaccompanied - but with a reduced 'streetwise' knowledge?

Congrats on passing your test first time:thumbsup:

Thanks!

Yes but when you are on a provisional and have a full licence holder next to you, it isnt like they are in the drivers seat. At the end of the day I am the one driving.

Mmm - see your point. It could be that their view, is that you have the 'wisdom' (:whistling: ) of an experienced, qualified driver guiding you (or it could just be that insurance companies hold all the aces?)
#21
congrats !!! its an amazing feeling i remember it well !!!! my first and only achievement i think !!!lol shop around for insurance tho !!!!:w00t:

its costing me £1700 to be a named driver on my mums car, im 17 and the is only a 1 litre Hyundai amica, iw was costing my mum who's the main driver £500 so ive added £1200 on, hopefully looking to do that pass plus thing, i heard it reduces the insurance by 30%, is that true?
#27
well done!

and yes the insurance is a joke, my son has been driving a couple of years now, and his insurance is still crazy, i do feel so sorry for the youngsters of today, not sure how they expect you to live and also to get onto the property ladder, well that is a joke.

getting back to insurance try swift.com or co.uk not sure which, but worth a look! :)

Pass plus only applies to the policy holder and is not active for named drivers.
