I have just cancelled the monthly TV licence direct debit because I don't believe that I should start paying for it until it's due.

I started paying for the 2009 - 2010 on 3rd April this year and paid the full amount within 6 month's.

This is what the TV licensing website says:-

In most cases you pay monthly instalments of around £24 per month for the first six months.

Then you start paying towards your next licence in the seventh month, with 12 monthly instalments of less than £12 per month.

All your future licences will then be paid in this way.

Therefore because I have cancelled the direct debit after the 6 month's have been paid I now don't need to make a payment until 1st April 2010.

Which means I have 6 month's free of TV licence direct debits.

I wonder how many people die and the TV licence has been paid 6 month's in advance, nice little money making scheme for them!

Bravo dlm, you tell em!

Watchdog did something recently about Virgin and the ending of contracts for people have died, apparently only the account holder can cancel the contract :o

so your only paying 6 months in advance and six months behind then, seems fair

I have actually wondered about that too btw. Anytime my new license comes through its always showing payments in advance
#7
Think I will go cancel mine :-D

Pah, why even bother paying for a tv licence? I just stand outside next doors living room window watching hers through a gap in the curtains! :whistling:

Seriously though the only thing we watch on the beeb is top gear, hardly any other TV too, mostly used for gaming and DVD's

You know you can get a refund if you move house and already have a tv licence. I'd rather pay £11 a month than double for 6 months.

I'd rather have the money in my account for 6 month's

I completely agree that it's a fiddle, I'm sure there are loads of occasions where people have paid more than they should because they don't realise it works this way. I don't see any reason why you should have to pay more than one month in advance :s

if you pay quarterly then you only pay it 3 months @ at a time so ina yr you only pay a yrs money.if that makes sense.
i.e 1st sep 36quid 1st dec 36quid 1st march 36quid 1st june 36quid along them lines anyway.

You pay instalments of around £37 every three months. By paying quarterly the majority of your licence is paid for on a pay-as-you-go basis. This differs from our other instalment schemes, where at least half of the licence fee is collected in advance. As a result, quarterly payments incur a small premium of £1.25 per quarter which is included in your payment.

I refuse to pay an extra £1.25 per quarter ;-)

Why bother with a TV License, (nearly) everything is available on iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD and Demand Five, usually within a couple pf hours of it being broadcast

Oh dear, a victim of the TV License myths. You only need a license if you are watching or recording LIVE television.

You DO NOT need a license to play a games console, watch a video or dvd, or watch on demand videos on your PC

Time to bump this because the tv licence is still a rip off :(
