Hi there

So i wake up this morning and check my online banking to find that over £1200.00 has been taken from my bank account after my paypal account got hacked.

Paypal are saying that the payments have been stopped and will be refunded in 7-9 days.

Am not sure how this can f*ing happen and paypal are being completely useless.

If someone can help me or if this has happened to you please can you get in touch or post to the wall.

Thanks a ot

the ONLY way your account would be hacked if you GAVE your password out ....

paypal has secure servers so your password CANNOT be intercepted....

you have either clicked a fake email link from "paypal" or actually told someone your password...

log into paypal (if you can) and make your password secure.... IF you can't login then email or ring paypal and they will go through the methods of setting a new password and giving you access back...

and a handy tip ...... if you recieve any email from paypal ......... never ever click a link ... always type www.paypal.co.uk in your browser window ...... this goes the same for bank emails and ebay...

be safe with your passwords as its your money being used

Yes they did. Still doesnt help me and theres no guarantee or confirmation this going to happen. Im still left with zero cash until this happens.

paypal are always good with this ..... they have to do checks and then recover the money so 7 days wait for the op's money is fair ......

cash withdrawals :? they need a bank account set up, and you would have recieved an email saying a new bank account had been set up

they need to verify the bank account too

unless it was done through your bank account ??

Thanks for the message mate. I am unsure as to how this has happened as i am very careful with my password data. The bank were very helpful and just reversed all the debits immediately.

I am still in shock...

thats life im afraid, choose a better password with numbers, letters, lowercas and higher case

the banks would take just as long to get it sorted as it has to be investigated, they arent just gonna give you the money back in case you are the scammer.....

nothing else can be done im afriad

paypal use direct debit to banks so if you ask niceley at your bank they can perform a snachback and your funds will be back the same day

This happened to me last month. Believe it or not my yahoo email, paypal account (same email id) and ebay were hacked at the same time. Nothing would let me in as they had changed the password. Luckily, somehow paypal had sensed something wrong and put withdrawal restrictions on the account. Had to ring yahoo, ebay and paypal to reclaim my accounts back.

OP: Ring Paypal, they are quite helpful.

P.S. I clicked a link in an evil email to login to Paypal to check out a false transaction. My bad.

It was some **** like 'sms global' but the debit just said paypal debit.

It was taken direct out of my bank account. HSBC have reversed the transactions and its showing up in my net banking ok now.

I'd advise anyone to check their paypal and possibly any other accounts that have access to their money and make sure your password is secure. Thanks to everyone that has contributed. What a start to the day.

Got my final dissertation due in tomorrow also... 5,000 words to do was looking bleak :?

are you saying the bank has just give you all your money back with no investigation.......

if so you have just killed that paypal account they will most probably ban you for going past them and straight to the bank... they will have to take the hit

as i said it would have been a link in an email or on an ebay page / or an ebay message...

never click any link saying paypal etc as the address can be masked ... they are sent to another page then onto paypal but the original page copies the data from the paypal page... its a common scam ,...

the only time i click a paypal link is on the ebay site when i have won an item ......

a common way to find a fake paypal email is it begins dear customer etc where as paypal will call you by your name ....

I think generally the rule of thumb is don't click any link in any email.

Goto the site itself, manually, in your browser, and if its as important as the email often states, itll be on the website somewhere obvious!

The bank refunded the direct debits as they were due to go out later today.

What do you mean i have killed that account?

I didn't really have an option and don't really care as long as i got my money back asap.
I will call paypal to let them know

i think he is jumping the gun a little ......... paypal don't like people going over their heads and contacting the bank ..... but as the debits hadn't gone out ... you had the chance to stop them so did the right thing ... also paypal would take a couple of days to remove them and by that time they would have gone through....

check your account to see the bank account or paypal account the credits were sent too ..... it will be in recent transactions

Chargebacks and direct debit refunds against paypal makes them very angry!

you contacted paypal about this and they are investigating it, but before they have had chance you have gone above them and got your bank to reverse the funds, so paypal are now investigating something on your behalf when you have already got your funds back.

they wont be too happy and will probably cancel, restrict your account for not following protocol.

i can understand your postition and i would want my money back straight away as well but youve started the ball rolling with paypal.... there is loads of threads on other forums about this and they dont take too kindly to not allowing the investgation to be completed.

Updated all info. I think it was an email from paypal as you pointed out as i did change my details a few weeks back thinking it was a legit email from paypal themselves.

Thanks for the detailed input. Rep has been added.

I had my paypal account hacked last year, luckily the company they tried to use it with (play asia) I already had an account with so they e-mailed me comformation of the order and I was able to stop the transaction before it went through.

now spam any paypal emails you get .... i never had a problem since spamming the ones i know are fake ..... the only ones i ever recieve is when i have sent a payment or recieved one ....

set up a google mail account it is the best account for stopping spam .... if some does somehow get through then you can mark it as spam (lot better than hotmail on spam prevention)
