I have bought an item from a private seller and paid by paypal (nearly two weeks ago). I have sent several e mails but no goods have turned up. I wondered what protection I had from paypal - i.e can I start a dispute. I would welcome any advise please. Many thanks in advance.

Have a look at the listing and see what it says about buyer protection. You should be covered and its definately worth opening a dispute. If paypal get no response from the seller then they will reverse the transaction and you will get your money back

Yeah you can. First thing to do is send an e-mail stating as you have had no answer from them your giving them 24 hours to reply to this otherwise you will file a dispute...

It might be a genuine reason...

Then file a dispute if no answer or your unhappy with the reply

I e mailed them again yesterday saying that I would give them 24 hours, however the e mailed was returned. I know this person trades on e bay, so sent a general message that way - but still no reply! Why do people seem so genuine then do the dirty!! Feel well ripped off !!

Some people are like that, what goes around comes around.
Just file a dispute then, sounds like they have no arguement and Paypal will see that. Takes a while sometimes...give them 48 hours to reply then make sure you escalate

Yeh just open a dispute through paypal. Always takes ages going through these processes, but in the end justice will prevail! I've done a few of these through ebay/paypal but you should be fine.

Will do - many thanks for all your help xx

I seem to have missed the bit where the OP said they bought something through ebay.......

I just point this out as the rules are completely different for non ebay claims and the likelihood of them finding in your favour is very low.

At the moment there are a couple of things i want to buy and will add up to a fair bit of money. There are a lot to choose from up and down country but not near me. I could get a reasonably good deal with them but without going to get the item how do i know the person is not fake cos once the moneys gone thats it. Ebay is better for knowing the item should arrive etc.. but the items are fetching too much on there

If you marked the item as payment for goods then it is exactly the same rules as for ebay items they have to prove they sent the item

Yes I marked as 'payment for goods' so maybe I will give it a try.

Yes thats true, I had problem last week with someone on HUKD and they said doesn't matter not ebay

Its Paypal who provide the protection not ebay

You dont ALWAYS get your money back. I have had two traders with ebay do a runner with my money. One was for £20 and I got £5 back and the other for £40 and i got zip back.

If they close the account they signed up with paypal, paypal cant get the money back for you. :x

I am very carefull now and tend to only trade with 100% ebayers or people I have an address and phone number for.

There is always a risk i'm afraid.
