It doesn't even need to be a credit card charge back. It can be a paypal claim where paypal will ask you for a tracking number. As it was collection and you cant supply a tracking number you will lose the money and the item.

I would strongly recommend against accepting Paypal on collections as you have outlined, unscrupulous buyers will make a chargeback and claim not to have received the item. There is no appeal possible if a chargeback was made even if you had a signature from them. Refund the payment and state cash only.

Doing a chargeback on a credit card means that their credit card company may choose to give that person their money back as a kinda insurance payment, they won't get the money back from your husband, it comes out of the credit card fee that retailers (like paypal) have to pay for you using credit over debit. That is why when you pay for an eBay item by credit card, paypal always try and discourage you and suggest debit, because they don't want to pay the extra.

You should ask for cash on collection only as if it's paid for by Paypal and then collected you will not have official proof of delivery which you need for your seller protection, even if you get them to sign a piece of paper you are open to scammers as you can't prove it was delivered to the person whose Paypal address it is.

Edit: Just saw Paypal gift so scrap that, it's different with gift, but I didn't think you could pay via eBay with gift, it'll have to be a transaction outside of eBay.

Could they still get the money back if they start an "unauthorised payment" claim with Paypal.

honestly I dont know - but as its a gift payment would be difficult to explain why its an unauthorised payment, unless u state someone has fraudently used your paypal account - I think!!

Yer if somebodys collecting do cash only as then no risk for you, as i have heard of people collecting it in person and then claiming it was posted and never received, be careful

Clear points as this thread is a mess.

1, Seller protection will cover you for ebay transactions which are chargedback not gift off ebay transactions.

2. Seller protection is not applicable here.

3. A chargeback is not applicable to a gift payment.

4. Gift payments can be reversed under 2 circumstances, there is a report of fraud on the account, or 2 the payment source bounces as the instant payment you think you are getting is not so. This is called a reversal.

No 4 is your only risk, you don't have to worry about tracking, etc, etc. It's as rare as hens teeth due to safeguards pp have but still a miniscule chance :)

Well a reversal is usually anywhere between 3-10 days.

Why not just drop them a friendly e-mail asking thanking them for collecting the item and asking them if they are enjoying whatever you sold them,
hopefully they will reply and you will have your proof of collecting incase what you are worried about happens
