How to trade safely on ebay & paypal ........

When the item sells do the following......

1. Make sure the buyer is Uk based - Parcels outside the uk can't be tracked with paypal and you will an item not recieved dispute...
Check their ebay address & paypal to make sure they are identical

2. Make sure on the paypal reciept that the buyer has a confirmed address (uk only)
Login to paypal & find the transaction details (http://img440.imageshack.us/my.php?image=paypalconfirmey9.jpg

3. Make sure the payment is instant .. it will show on the receipt. IF you recieve an email, Do not click LInks, Login to paypal & check the payment is there.
IF the payment is seen as an "echeque" then you will need to wait upto 14 days for the transfer to be made. Do not send item before it has been fully transfered.
Scammers send fake emails saying you have recieved payment. Never belive it. Always check your account.

Paypal will NEVER ask you for details etc. Always log in to your paypal account (not fron links)

4. ONLY send to the paypal address given ..... IF the seller asks for delivery to another destination (normnally nigeria)
Refuse Point Blank..... THEY may spin a sob story its for a cousin who is ill etc DO NOT SEND

5. Send via trackable means. The only ones paypal accept are DHL, FEDEX, UPS, ROYAL MAIL and a few couriers.....
IF YOU DO NOT SEND VIA TRACKABLE MEANS YOU WILL LOSE A PAYPAL "ITEM NOT RECEIVED DISPUTE". trackable means that the status of the parcel can be
checked on the website of the carrier. IF sending by royal mail, take the item to a post office & ask for a certificate of posting. This enables you to claim back from royal mail.
All couriers will issue a receipt when they pick up your ite, Use this if you need to get a refund.

from mse - a list of couriers that ebay allow http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=7034959&postcount=4

NOTE: by sending the item via trackable methods & making sure the account is verified & the seller has verified their address then if the user opens a credit card chargeback then you have enough evidence to win it .......

6. Send the item securely as possible. If the item becomes damaged then you will lose an "ITEM NOT AS DESCRIBED" also make sure your ebay auction displays any marks etc
BUY adequate insurance on items so if it does get damaged, you can be refunded by the carrier.

7. Sellers on The fs/ft forum here, ask for "gift payment". This is when ebay lets a seller recieve the money without the usual paypal fee. DO NOT do this if you cannot trust the seller... Using a gift payment means you have no paypal protection. Only send via gift if the seller is trustworthy e.g. high feedback on the forums)

8. Collection Items ...... Paypal made it mandatory to pay for all items even collection with paypal but this is wrong ..... IF SOMEONE WANTS TO COLLECT, TELL THEM CASH ON COLLECTION ONLY ........if you accept paypal you cannot have a teacking # cos they picked it up. The buyer will then win a item not receiced dispute. PAYPAL MADE A HUGE BOO BOO WITH THIS RULE. it does happen so be aware

9. TO STOP (OR TRY TO) FOREIGNERS BIDDING ON YOUR ITEMS USE THIS LINK http://my.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MyeBay&CurrentPage=MyeBayPreferences&gbh=1&ssPageName=STRK:ME:LNLK
CHANGE YOUR BUYER REQUIREMENTS E.G. LOCATION, FEEDBACK SCORE.

Tips

1. If you listed the item on ebay as a "BUY IT NOW" the seller can return the item within 7 days and be fully refunded .... This is part of the distance selling regulations ... but you may charge a restocking fee (e.g. the postage)

2. Once the item has been sent, its a good idea to remove the money from your account ..... (paypal say you shouldn't)
This is free if sending over £50

3. On your ebay listing do not say "you have 3 days to pay". ebay give all buyers 7 days to make payment... If not payment recieved after 7 days, send a invoice (in your ebay account manager)
If no payment after 10 days open a NPB (non paying buyer). The seller than has 7 days to pay, if payment is not made then you can issue a strike against the sellers account.
IF they do pay, just cancel the NPB

4. Never keep lots of money in your account, i empty it once it reaches £50

5. Before selling to someone. e.g. sending item. Check their feedback

6. Some crooks are using a method to tricl buyers. You buy an expensive item but they send an open box. Many people fall for this ...... the box will be recorded or special delivery & will require a signature. Before you sign check the weight... and ask the postman / courier to wait while you check contents.... you can then send back with the person ......
If you do sign for it & realise you have been had.... you have 2 choices...... get a proof of weight or open SNAD on paypal (significantly not as described). Paypal will ask you to send the box back recorded delivery.... You then should recieve your money back.....
This is such a simple scam but it is fooling people.
To check an ebay account either look through your account or use the tools at www.toolhaus.org

Using toolhaus you can check their FeedBack, check if they have had "mutuals" (when a NPB is issued and the buyer and seller agree to not to finish sale)
You can check their "30 days" feedback. This is the feedback ebay use now . You can check how they have performed in them categories.

6. REPEATED BUT ........ NEVER CLICK EMAIL LINKS SEEN TO BE FROM PAYPAL OR EBAY.....

thanks, never seems to work for me

oops i just remembered another scam, gonna add it now :-D

Thanks for the guide, have been selling on ebay for a while with no problems but with all these stupid changes favouring the buyers, it's best everybody protects themselves as much as possible! Rep for you my friend :)

EDIT: Sorry no rep it says I have to spread the rep around before giving it to you again! will rep you another time lol

I haven't read your guide, but well done for doing it. It was hard being the only writer of "Ultimate guides" on Misc.

Have some rep. :)
banned#6
Good advice but can i just point out, in 1 (i presume where you put seller you meant buyer)
If you accept bids from international bidders then you can't just turn round and say you aren't going to send them if they are outside the uk. If you want to limit to uk only then do it when you list the item not after it sells!

on TIP 1

The DSR's only apply to businesses.

wrong unfortunately........ as a seller you can refuse to send it if you believe its gonna be a scam...... you will just get a warning from ebay ...... or ask the seller to pay via western union or bank transfer .....

i don't care about a warning from ebay if it stops me being scammed by some one :p

the dsr's are also for BIN's on ebay ........ because its a full priced sale not an auction .......

as you said, you can limit your buyer markets but people get around this by making thei ebay name say there in London but the paypal will say they are in austria etc ......

i will get a link & add that to the list ;)

It's not wrong, if it was wrong information then why would you get a warning from ebay if it wasn't against their rules? You would also likely get a neg from the buyer. If you are going to refuse to send internationally then why even offer international shipping in the first place? Negs and the stars are important now as you can get suspended, restricted and if you are a power seller you pay extra fees if your ratings aren't high.

would like to see the link to the dsr's that say they are for private individuals not just businesses thanks.

EDIT: link to the dsr's

What is distance selling?

The regulations cover distance contracts for goods and services made between suppliers and consumers. Business to business contracts are not covered. A distance contract is one where there has been no face to face contact between the consumer and a representative of your business, or someone acting indirectly on your behalf, such as in a showroom or a door to door sales person, up to and including the moment that the contract is concluded.

If you do not usually supply consumers by distance means, but you agree to do so in response to a one-off request, the Regulations will not apply to you. However, if your business regularly handles 'one-off' requests and is organised so that it can deal with such requests (for example, there is a mail order facility), you will need to comply with the Regulations.

That is only talking about businesses, nothing in there about someone selling a second hand or unwanted item for example.

i read it somewhere that all BIN's are protected by the dsr because its not an auction but a fixed sale
i may be wrong .....

and would yuoi send an ipod to russia just do you don't get a neg?? i would prefer to have my money & not be scammed and have neither......

as i put in the OP, put the sellers in foreign countries & refuse to sell to any that try to bypass it...

its now a dog eat dog world on ebay & you need to play hardball ...... most of the scammers will not neg you because its a waste of there time..... they can spend that time on a new victim

A few years back i closed my paypal and ebay account because i was using it way too much!! About a year after this i received a phonecall from NCO saying i owed someone $200. I rang ebay who wouldnt tell me that name of the ebay person or any details/dates and NCO (a debt company as they told me) wouldnt tell me anything either. They were really dodgy asking me to confrm my name and address when they should have know this (obviously i didnt tell them anything) and when i started threatening them with the police i never heard anything about it again. Even if you think its ebay on the phone, ask them to write to you, dont give them any details, they should know it all already. When i researched NCO on the internet I wasnt the only person who they targeted. I think they might be a real company but people are using their name. Also my boyfriend bought a few things from ppl abroad who demanded he paid by check and sent it to a different address that was on their ebay thing. Its well dodgy I only go on it now if i really need to.
After ive just wrote all that i realised its not even what you were talking about lol!!

thats a very good point made there........ ebay will never ring you....... they will get bailiffs if you don't pay your fees etc but will never ring you

if a debt collection agency ring you about ebay, ask for a written letter & also check your ebay account
there are companies that pretend to be someone else to get info & money

not so long ago, someone pretendded to be martin lewis from moneysavingexpert & rung people asking fir details & help them to pay off credit cards etc all one big scam

Of course not, but then I would limit a sale of anything remotely expensive to uk buyers and not have the hassle anyway.
I don't see the problem, when you list you say uk buyers only.
Then, assuming everything is ok (confirmed address etc) a uk buyer wins it and you send it.
If you list internationally then a buyer from outside the uk wins it, you have no intention of selling to anyone outside the uk, you then have to refund him, do a second chance offer (who might also be outside the uk), get an ebay warning, get a neg & pay 2 sets of fees.
I really don't understand the problem with just listing uk only and saving the hassle?

as i said ^^^^, buyers can make their ebay profile say london uk, but have their paypal say austria

its highly common from buyers and sellers...... a lot of the chinese sellers say they are in the UK but the item is shipped from china .....

using the tips above i have'nt been scammed yet ..... i have 2 strikes on my account but u still have my money & the items,........ i am careful when buying & that helps me......

you could do a second chance but if the item is popular, its common for most of the bidders to be scammers,. I will do a second chance offer if the seller is worthy

and no you don't pay 2 x the fees. If you won't go trhough the transaction, you can get your fees back (if the seller agrees or doesnt respond)

i would rather lose £10 in fees than lose £300 & a iphone ......

ebay is a great resource to get the few cheap items or get items that are rare but you do have to be vigilant.......
#17
im gonna make a new thread for this but posting this here 2 for peeps to see ..........

How to make a safe transaction on HUKD

1. Once you find an item you like..... Check the users feedback by clicking http://hotukdeals.com/forum-feedback

2. If the feedback is low, ask for some ebay feedback.... check a users feedback at www.toolhaus.org & if to make you feel safe
(cos anyone can say this is my ebay account) send the user a PM through ebay with a secret password, ask them to tell you the password in the sale thread

3. Always ask for a picture that has the items clearly & a peice of paper with the users username & the days date.... This shows the user has the item in the possession

4. Pay via paypal then you have some comebacks... ask for recorded delivery

some sellers might say i want a bank transfer or paypal gift..... do this at your own risk, never do it if you don't feel safe
none of the above have protection so be careful

5. SWAP details with the seller, this includes name, address & phone numbers, check these are correct

6. If a problem occurs, leave a message in the thread and let a moderator know....

selling on here is 99% fun but like ebay, there are people wanting to rip others off....

be careful and don't go ahrad with a sale if anything seems out of the oridinary

good luck

Thats not what i meant, if thats the case then you can report them to ebay and pull out the sale legitimately, you didn't say that in the first post, all you said was don't sell to anyone outside the uk if they won the item.

1. Make sure the seller is Uk based - Parcels outside the uk can't be tracked with paypal and you will an item not recieved dispute...
Check their ebay address & paypal to make sure they are identical

And if you get strike number 3 you will be banned from ebay, so its not exactly 'nothing will happen'

i would rather be banned by ebay than lose hundreds of pounds & the goods...... how easy it to make another ebay account ???

1. If you listed the item on ebay as a "BUY IT NOW" the seller can return the item within 7 days and be fully refunded .... This is part of the distance selling regulations ... but you may charge a restocking fee (e.g. the postage)

ONLY applicable IF your a commercial seller, it DOES NOT APPLY to private indivuals

THE ONLY REAL GUARANTEED WAY NOT TO GET SCAMMED BY ON EBAY AND BY PAYPAL (AND HERE)
1: ONLY ACCEPT CASH FOR ANYTHING YOU SELL
2: NEVER ACCEPT PAYPAL (ANY transaction on paypal can end up with you losing the money no matter how careful you THINK you've been)
3: IF YOU ACCEPT CHEQUES THEN DONT send the items until the cheque has cleared in your bank account

EBAY regs say you MUST accept paypal as method of payment in the listing, however you CAN offer other methods such as nochex, cheque or cash

By he way I personally would be extremely wary of anyone that has or says they have several ebay id's my immediate thought would be why?

Also looking for feedback does not guarantee anything
as has been said in one of the posts above where someone admitted to having 3 ebay id's someone could have 1 ebay id they keep with really good feedback another with terrible feedback and another where they got banned, feedback means nothing in real life, it's just a guide thats all

The only real way not to get scammed is if your buying pay cash or cheque even if it means not releasing the goods until the cheque clears
bank transfer is fine as you have the money straight away (or within 3 days) but again dont send until it clears.

but by accepting paypal, your sales will be 30% better......... most people will only pay via paypal
accepting cheque on hukd is fine but ebay isnt, sellers are impatient (read ebays forums for proof)

unfortunately accepting cash is hard unless people collect.......

i have done 30+ transactions here & 40 on ebay & not a problem with paypal

as long as the money doesnt cloud your judgement and your vigilant, you should be fine

another point to add to my tips .........

by sending the item via trackable methods & making sure the account is verified & the seller has verified their address then if the user opens a credit card chargeback then you have enough evidence to win it .......

so would you send money via bank transfer to someone you don't know

i never once said rely on feedback ........ use it as a guide,, if feedback looks good but you have gut feelings about the seller than don't gp ahead .......

bank transfter is good for sellers but is a pain in the ass for buyers cos there is no protection if anything goes wrong

scammers rely on people being ignorant " it won't happen to me" & seeing the £££ signs

if you stop a sale, its not the end of the world ...... it may have saved you hundreds of pounds & chit loads of problems.......

please people do your own checks, these are a guide ....... i always google a company website before i buy from them (if i havent heard of them), same with ebayers..... if they scammed someone, then there might be a google thread on it ....... google is a great resource ;)

also use the ebay forums, them guys are true scam busters, they can tell you what to do if you get scammed ..........

I wasn't ripping your guide to shreads at all if that was aimed at me.
I pointed out 2 little mistakes in it, if you can't accept constructive suggestions then I don't know what to suggest. I even said in my first post it was a good guide!
You have only done 40 transactions on ebay you said, I have over 1000 on one account i don't use any more, 500+ on another that is active and 170+ on another and I'm still learning things. Like, for example, until a few weeks ago I didn't know you could appeal a paypal reversal.
