I am looking at getting a good cheap graphics card for a PC I have just bought and will be looking to pay about £50-£60. Can anyone advise a good card that can handle games like Counter-Strike: Source easily?

I am not sure whether it is AGP or PCI-e as I haven't received it yet so advice on either would be great.

they are the best at that price but things are heating up in the gfx war, consider stretching or holding out a bit
i've bought for a friend a gigabyte 3870 512Mb that is awesome at £135

In that price range you're looking at:

ATI
x1950 pro or 3650

Nvidia
8600gts or 7900gs/gt

Do u need links for them?
#11
Well I would like a graphics card which can play Counter-strike 1.6 and source with a good high, constant FPS.
#12
yeah these cards will run the source engine maxed out on a 22" screen, is that what you have?

edit: perhaps not the 3650, but its slightly cheaper than the rest
#13
i would recomend the ati 2600HD 512mn version from novatech.co.uk its £60ish but will run crysis (EXTREMLY DEMANDING - HIGEST SPEC GAME OF 07/08) smoothly at high (but not v high) overal excelent performance from this kit

the 1950pro and the 7900 are dx9 cards surely best to go dx10 at the mo?

a 22" screen often is 1680*1050 thats a lot for a budget card and frame rates will suffer
didnt notice any 3650's at this price range at least not brands i've used, i tend to stick with those on gfx

the novatech model is a pro version which is below the branded one i pointed out, it has more mem but not a lot of use if the gpu cant read it fast enuf, so can slow things down

I am using a 17" SyncMaster 730bf monitor.

I've also been reading that this is a very good card for the money:

ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

£85

Although says it takes up two slots and don't know if my mobo will have that... I'm **** when it comes to stuf flike this!
#20
an 7600 or 8600GT would be ok for that, people say they suck but they dont they just arent as high end as ones that play games like Crysis on high.

I have a 8600GT and like it, I play games like Source and WOW on max settings with no problems and have the same spec PC as you(cept 4 gigs of ram)

I'll be looking at upgrading my ram. What FPS do you get on source?
#22
if u can afford the 3850 it will blow the other cards away, it is directX 10 compatible, although thats not necessary at the moment as not many games use it yet.

Any of the cards I have mentioned will run the source engine maxed out on a 17" monitor.

When it says that it takes up two slots all that means is that the fan is so big that you can't physically get a card into the slot next to the one that the card is in. It doesn't mean that you need two graphics slots for the card.

Stupid question and seomthing I should probably know, but how many PCI-e slots is my card likely to have :S
#25
if you've got a fairly recent motherboard and it has a PCI-E slot then it should fit fine.

- Gainward Bliss 7950GX2
- XFX GEFORCE 8600GT 256MB
- RADEON X1600PRO 512MB
- ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

What order would you put them in good to worse and how much for each?
#27
I'd say:

- ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) £85
- Gainward Bliss 7950GX2 £100
- XFX GEFORCE 8600GT 256MB £60
- RADEON X1600PRO 512MB £40

I would still say that if you can afford it the 3850 would be your best option.

Seem to be some expert ppl looking in this forum :)
Do you think any of those cards will work in a
Dell Vostro 200,

E2200 Duo Core
160Gb 7200rpm SATA drive
Looking at the Dell website, the cards that they aupply are about 30W power use. I'm gonna guess a little bit extra won't kill the system though. So any tips for myself on a good card :) in about the similar price range as this fine chap.

What PSU do you think would be sufficient for my machine, as I've just found out it only has 250w!
#31
go for at least a good brand 450-500w
#32
Bah! Thought I bought it on the cheap but going to cost me loads when I've upgraded graphics card, psu and ram!
#33
Not sure what you were expecting here?
the RAM doesn't need upgrading to play css at a decent frame rate, the boost you will get from not using on-board graphics will be significant even with your original budget
if u stick with the cards i suggested its doubtful they will need a bigger psu either just don't mess with over clocking
#34
Well I was planning on overclocking the CPU.

well dont, waste of time on these cpu's they actually end up slower bcos of the error correction kicking in
if u want some tips on performance tuning give me a pm when u are ready, b4 the os install if u can
