Hi can anyone help please.

I have been trying to make my pc start a bit quicker by using msconfig system startup. I unchecked several programmes on the startup list but checking on the net first which ones were not really needed.

Now i get:

Windows xp could not start because the following is missing or corrupt.
windowssystem32configsystem.
repair using the original disc and press r on the first page.

I dont have this disc.

I did get windows restarted on safe mode and enabled all on system startup and then tried a system restore but this crashed half way through so i had to restart the computer.

Now all i get is the windows could not start etc etc.

F2, F8 AND F12 still function but safe mode wont.

Anybody got any ideas

Regards

Looks like your registry has become corrupt,You will struggle to recover from this,It is possible but you need the Windows disc and a lot of knowledge, If you have anything valuable on your HDD you would probably be better of removing the HDD and putting it in another PC to recover your files then do a clean install,

Looks like i will have to purchase a new op system then. Do you know the best place to buy xp. I have a dodgy copy on another computer but know these cannot be updated online.

You can dowload it and use any copy provided you have a COA sticker on your PC ,You will need the same version however IE: XP OEM .

There is a much easier way of getting the data off the hard drive, download linux live cd, & boot the computer with the cd in & it will load up linux & then you can transfer any data off the hard drive on to a usb flash drive or memory card etc

Do you know if your computer has a recovery partition? What is your computer model?

Its a dell 380 workstation. I have asked a number of people at work today and may have some answers later.
