Hi all,

I'm at a loss when it somes to graphics cards, I've never kept up with the pace on them so haven't a clue where to start.

I've just upgraded to Vista, and it has told me that due to my graphics card, my PC is rated 1/5.........everything else is fine.

Now, where can I get a good graphics card, on the cheap ?

Not bothered whether it is 2nd hand or not (so if you have one spare.....).

Any info on how they compare, which will work well with Vista, how they overclock, prices etc is very much welcome.

Cheers guys

Chris

Tom's hardware has an excellent comparison chart for graphics cards: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html
#2
Thanks for that - any recommendations ?

Cheaper the better at the mo

Thanks

ps - are all cards Vista compatible ?

Such as

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/106578
#4
It is not so much the card itself that has to be compatible, but the drivers!

So as long as you stick with the main two brands, Nvidia or ATI then their latest drivers would work on Vista.

Unfortunately I dont have any recomendations as I am not the biggest hardware guru ever either :)
#5
lol - fair enough, cheers anyway

I'm sure some "expert" will be along shortly (well I hope so lol)

Another question while I'm at it - can you get a graphics card with HDMI connections to link up to HDTV's ?
#6
You can indeed.

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/133275

This has HDMI out (HD-TV)
#7
Need to know which graphics card you have now to be able to tell you which is a good upgrade.
#8
Big question is are you bothered about DirectX 10 support? If you're not I'd recommend the ATI x1950's as nicely priced but powerful cards.
#9
I'll let you know when I get in (in work at the minute) - Mr Microsoft has told Vista that it's ***** & rated it 1 out of 5 though.....

Cheers guys - will update as soon as I get in !

Geforce 7600GT £66.98
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/118475

I opted for this one a few months ago as I wasn't ready to splash out on the 8 series, and I don't have Vista so no point in the Direct x 10 for me.
#11
Right (dont laugh) I have a Radeon 9250 256mb..
#12
hahahahahah oops lol

ok why are u upgrading?

are u intending to play games?
#13
I'm intending to lol

I used to play CS (& clones), Planetside etc with no problems - I just want to upgrade my whole system - starting with the Graphics card (being the "weak point" on my machine)
#14
ok your in luck the guru has arrived (me:-D )

as some have already stated the best performance to ££ ratio right now is the x1950pro which would roughly cost u £75

if u want a card that will handle dx10 games later on and vista eye candy then a 8600GT onwards is your best bet as it can play games too

it also depends on your budget
#15
Nice one :)

Havent defined buget yet, but the lower price the better.....

How much is the 8600GT ?

Any of these got HDMI connections ?

Thanks Muff
#16
yep u can get the 8600's with hdmi

i saw some for around same price of £75 but obviously with a bit of searching u could probably find a better deal
#17
Any linky's ?

Thanks mate
#19
£68.42 delivered

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inno3D-Geforce-8600GT-1400MHz-Graphics/dp/B000Q2OIHI

Is this the correct card & best price ?

Thanks fellas
#20
Scrap that, thats the 256mb version - i take it that the 512mb version is better !!
#21
it will be for huge resolutions but if theres a big price difference then id just get the 256
#22
256mb = £60

512mb = £85

1024mb = £120
#23
How about the following for £29?

MSI 8400GS 256MB DDR2, DVI/VGA/HDTVout PCI-E Graphics Card
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/133002
#24
Is it any good Jaz - as I said above, i have no clue about graphics cards lol
#25
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/slideshow/MSI-8400-GS-SLI,0101-49862-2249----jpg-.html

8600GT is 3 x better in a benchmark test.......

Damn - I hate choosing lol

UPDATE

Hi all,

Thanks to those that have chipped in to help, I've found out now that my motherboard takes an AGP card - so that throws out all the cards I've been looking at lol

Motherboard LINK

So I'm now looking at decent AGP cards if anyone has any reccomendations ?

Thanks again
#27
Anyone ?

Ta
#28
Pretty much the same advice applies to AGP with the exception that the NVIDIA 8 series isn't (currently) available in AGP form.

So an ATI X1950 will give you the most bang per £, for example: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126420. Alternativly if you want a DirectX 10 card then something like an ATI 2600 would do nicely: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-162-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=403.

Thinking about it didn't you say earlier you were looking at upgrading the whole system eventually? In which case you may be better off upgrading to a PCI-E motherboard first, perhaps with on-board graphics to tide you over till you can afford a PCI-E g/c to go with it, as AGP is on the way out.
#30
Nice one mate - yet another spanner in the works lol
#31
I'm sticking with the motherboard for the time being - I really can't be @rsed changing it just yet......

So, out of these two (similar priced) - which is the best ?

Sapphire X1950GT 256MB GDDR3 Dual DVI TVO

Sapphire ATI Radeon 2600 XT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (AGP)
#32
They have similar outputs, memory etc. so it's pretty much just a case of the 1950 for pure speed, the 2600 for DirectX 10 support.
#33
So your saying the 2600 is slower, but has more capabilities ?
#34
chris what resolutions will u be running it at?

ie how big is your monitor?

and yeah 2600XT is alot slower than the x1950pro
#35
ChrisUK

Kinda it is slower yes but capabilities wise DirectX 10 is a Vista only thing. Eventually games will be coming out that are DirectX 10 only but not till Vista is more or less the dominant OS (this may never happen what with all the bad press etc.), but the rest of your system probably wont run those anyway so it largely comes down to your future plans.

EDIT: Personally for the games around now I'd favour the X1950

Thats pretty much it, the 2600 will also use less power etc and has better HD video processing, but for non-DX10 games the 1950 will be better.

Hey, you might wanna check out my thread http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109787

I have a 8600 GTS for sale here and I am willing to drop the price a little to say £80? Also the other card on that thread is top knotch, used to be £400 a few years back and works a treat on most new games.
#38
Both are PCI-E though ? I have an AGP only motherboard....
#39
Chris i have an x1900xt 512mb card but i would want 50squid for it :( cex will offer me £78 which is bloody marvelous but i thought i might pop in here to see if you wanted mine first.
