Ok, I installed the free trial of Norton as I have been hearing it's much improved and since I have installed it it keeps telling me I have a boot sector virus called Boot Mebroot.

Have googled how to remove and I need to go into the recovery console to fix the mbr. Had to download an iso of the Vista recovery disk as I don't have the original disc. I am following all insructions, pressing R for repair, choosing the installation I want to fix, but when I go to the command prompt and type in "fixmbr" I'm just getting this message:

fixmbr is not recognized as internal or external command

So now I am stuck! Does anyone have any ideas why this is?

These are the instructions I am following.

I'm guessing that guide was written for Windows XP (as it makes reference to Windows ME) so maybe they left out the fixmbr command from the Vista recovery menu..?

Try using a Linux based anti-virus boot disk. e.g. http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/641173/free-avg-rescue-cd

I have used Bitdefender's one before and that cleared up a nasty virus very well. I've used F-Secure's one as well which most definitely has an option for scanning the MBR so try that one.

Make sure its up to date though. When you burn the image to the disk, it has old definitions.. there's a guide on how to update the definitions in the instructional manual bundled along with the F-Secure ISO so take a look at that....

edit:
here's a link: http://www.f-secure.com/linux-weblog/files/f-secure-rescue-cd-3.11.23804.zip
inside the ZIP file is an ISO and a PDF instruction manual. Read the manual to see how to acquire the latest definitions and burn the ISO to a disk (or use unetbootin to make a bootable USB drive with it on)

I was thinking the same ^ (About bring written for XP, I don't think I've had to use the recovery console in Vista before...)

Was looking for some links about fixing the mbr, here's a few:

http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windows-vista-general/26168-fix-mbr-vista.html

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392<----

More complicated than XP, but they give exact instructions (Follow the official M$ one).

Not tried it, (hopefully won't need to...) but AVG released this utility recently:

Might have potential?

Well the bootrec.exe /fixmbr worked so obviously I was just using the wrong command before, just running a scan now, hopefully it will all be clear soon! :)
